Gili Lankanfushi is the resort that owns the no-news-no-shoes positioning in the Maldives. The slogan is on the welcome mat as you arrive; the staff places your shoes in a drawstring bag at check-in and you get them back at check-out. Forty-five villas, every one over the water, every one accessible only by walkway from the central jetty, there are no roads, no buggies, no motorised transport on the island. The villas are built from sustainably-sourced Indonesian timber and finished with cane and woven rattan; the architecture by Habita is intentionally rustic, not contemporary, and the result is the resort that feels most genuinely tropical of any on this list. The flagship suite is the Private Reserve, a four-bedroom overwater compound on its own private deck, accessed only by the resort's dhoni, with a private water slide, a private chef, and a private speedboat.
