Butler etiquette
What to ask
- Routine: morning coffee, laundry, ironing, in-suite dining
- Specialised: shopping for items you forgot, restaurant bookings, private tours
- Personal: pressing clothes, packing, personal organisation
What not to ask
- Things outside the property they can't fulfill (avoid making them call concierge)
- Anything illegal or inappropriate
Tipping
$30-$100 per day for butler service. $200-$500 at end of stay for multi-day.
How to use a butler
The first 24 hours: tell the butler your preferences (coffee, breakfast time, sleep schedule, work pattern).
By Day 3: the butler knows your routine. Coffee arrives unprompted at the right time. Laundry is handled. Dinner reservations align with your evening plans.
By end of stay: the butler is part of the experience.
Five rules
- Brief preferences Day 1, saves friction
- Single-point-of-contact butler when possible
- Tip per day, not just at end
- Treat the butler as a colleague, not a servant
- Multi-trip relationship, request the same butler for repeat stays

Frequently asked questions
Last updated May 16, 2026
Which hotels have the best butler service in 2026?
Five tier-defining examples. St. Regis (every property, the originating brand, butler service is core to the brand operating standard), The Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties (Dorado Beach, Mandapa, Phulay Bay), Capella Hotels (Personal Assistant program functions as butler equivalent), Banyan Tree (in-villa butlers as standard), and Taj Palaces (the heritage khidmatgar tradition adapted to luxury hotel format). The category splits cleanly between brand-standard butler programs (St. Regis, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Banyan Tree) and property-specific premium butler at the top suites of luxury hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Aman, Four Seasons signature suites).
What is the difference between St. Regis butler and Ritz-Carlton butler?
Operating model. St. Regis butlers are the brand's flagship service standard, every guest in every category receives butler service as part of the rate, with the butler functioning as a single point of contact for the entire stay (unpacking, packing, beverage service on schedule, garment pressing). Ritz-Carlton butlers operate at the Reserve sub-brand and at Suite-level inventory only, most Ritz-Carlton rooms do not include butler service, only the Reserve villas or suite categories with butler add-on. Both are excellent; the St. Regis model is broader.
Is butler service worth the premium?
For 3+ night stays: yes, butler service compounds as the staff learns guest preferences (coffee order, pressing schedule, evening turndown timing) and as the operational layer of the stay (in-room dining, transportation, restaurant booking, daily logistics) reverts to a single named contact. For 1, 2 night stays: butler service is largely ceremonial, and the cost ($200, $800 nightly premium for butler-included suites at luxury hotels) doesn't math against the value extracted.
How do you tip a hotel butler?
Standard guidance: $10, $30 per day for routine service, more for substantial logistics (sourcing items, arranging transport, managing complex requests). Tip at the end of the stay in cash, in an envelope, by the butler's name. Some properties (Capella, Aman) explicitly include all gratuities in the room rate, even there, a closing tip is appropriate for sustained help. Cultural variation matters: tipping is more expected at Western-brand butler properties than at Japanese or Indian heritage properties where service inclusion is more comprehensive.
What can a hotel butler help with that the concierge cannot?
Three categories of work. Personal logistics that require room access, unpacking, garment pressing, in-room dining setup, beverage service on schedule. Same-guest continuity, the butler is assigned to specific rooms and knows preferences accumulated over the stay; concierges serve all guests and don't carry the same continuity. Discreet personal services, sourcing a specific item, managing surprise setups (proposal staging, anniversary delivery), handling time-sensitive personal requests. The concierge handles the external world; the butler handles the internal world of the stay.
