Maui: the resort benchmark
1. Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
Still the standard against which Hawaii resorts are measured: 383 rooms and suites on Wailea Beach, the adults-only Serenity Pool at the ocean's edge, and — a Four Seasons policy worth real money here — no resort fee. Entry rates run around $1,000 a night in season.
Honest note, and it's a big one: the resort is redesigning all 383 rooms in sections from March to mid-December 2026. It remains open, the new Club Floor debuted in May 2026, and finished sections are genuinely superb — but ask exactly which wings are under work for your dates. A construction-adjacent room at these prices is not the trip you planned.
2. Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort
The comeback story of the Wailea corridor: a $350 million property-wide renovation completed in 2024, capping 40 beachfront acres and 800-plus rooms with Kilolani Spa — at 50,000 square feet the largest in Hawaii — and the Wailea Canyon activity pool complex (rope swing, water elevator, swim-up grotto bar) that remains the best kids' pool system in the state. Entry from roughly $650–800; resort fee $55.
Honest note: it's a big, busy resort and proud of it. Couples seeking hush should look next door (or at #5); families will think they've found the promised land.
3. Montage Kapalua Bay
The all-suite residential play in West Maui: just 50 one-to-four-bedroom suites with full kitchens on 24 acres above Kapalua Bay, one of the most protected swimming and snorkeling coves on the island. For families and long stays, the format — laundry, kitchens, real living rooms — beats a standard suite at any price.
Honest note: entry pricing typically starts around the highest tier on this list, and the intimate scale means limited restaurant variety on-site. Kapalua's cooler, greener microclimate also surprises guests expecting Wailea's guaranteed sun.
4. The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua
West Maui's big-resort alternative: 466 rooms and suites refreshed in a $100 million renovation completed in 2022, with the Fire Lanai rooms (private firepits) as the signature booking and the long-running Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment program giving it the best kids' nature programming in Hawaii.
Honest note: the resort sits above D.T. Fleming Beach rather than on a swimmable resort beach — the trade for the dramatic setting is a shuttle or walk to calm water.
5. Hotel Wailea, Relais & Châteaux
Hawaii's only Relais & Châteaux member and its best adults-only address (guests 16+): 72 one-bedroom suites of 750 square feet on 15 hillside acres above the Wailea coast, with The Birdcage — a treehouse-style private dining table — as the island's most coveted proposal venue. A 2026 Travel + Leisure Hall of Fame inductee.
Honest note: it's up the hill, not on the beach — a shuttle takes you down. You're buying elevation, quiet and views, not toes-in-sand access.
6. Andaz Maui at Wailea
The design-forward one: roughly 300 rooms and villas (Hyatt's published counts vary by year) on Mokapu Beach, with the four-tier cascading infinity pools that made it Instagram's favorite Wailea address. The Japanese-influenced Morimoto Asia outpost and apartment-style villas broaden the offer.
Honest note: minimalist design reads cool to some, cold to others, and the pool decks fill early in peak weeks. It's the youngest-skewing crowd of the Wailea trio.
West Maui, honestly
Three years after the August 2023 fire, the Kaanapali and Kapalua resort areas — including Montage and the Ritz-Carlton above — are fully open and operating normally. Lahaina town's central burn zone remains closed and under reconstruction; the small-boat harbor reopened for limited operations in late 2025. Maui County's recovery framing is "a place for residents first and visitors second," and the practical translation is simple: come, but don't sightsee the burn zone, don't photograph damage, and put money into local businesses. Oahu: the everything island
7. Halekulani
The grande dame of Waikiki, and still its best hotel: 453 rooms in "seven shades of white," rebuilt through an 18-month renovation completed for its 2021 reopening. House Without a Key — live Hawaiian music and hula at sunset with Diamond Head behind — is the single most civilized evening in the state, and open to non-guests who plan ahead.
Honest note: it's in the middle of Waikiki, and the serenity is engineered, not geographic. Step off property and you're in the state's busiest square mile.
8. Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina
Oahu's resort answer: 370 rooms including 55 suites (minimum 640 square feet) on Ko Olina's Lagoon One, 25 minutes west of the airport and a world away from Waikiki. The $250 million conversion of the former Ihilani (completed 2016) built four pools, an adults-only wing, and — again, the Four Seasons policy — no resort fee, with entry rates from roughly $680.
Honest note: Ko Olina's lagoons are man-made and calm — perfect for kids, unexciting for bodysurfers — and dining beyond the resort complex means a drive.
9. The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach
The apartment play in Waikiki: around 550 residential-style units across two towers (2016 and 2018), all with kitchens or kitchenettes and washer-dryers, plus Sushi Sho — the first US outpost of Tokyo master Keiji Nakazawa. For families and week-plus stays, the run-your-own-household format is Waikiki's best value at the luxury tier.
Honest note: it's a block back from the sand and vertical by design — this is a residence experience with hotel service, not a beachfront resort.
10. Espacio, The Jewel of Waikiki
The most exclusive address in Hawaii by format: nine full-floor suites, one per floor, each with a private elevator landing, balcony Jacuzzi and butler service, opened in 2019 as a Leading Hotels of the World member. Rates commonly run $3,000–5,000 a night — Hawaii's answer to a private penthouse rather than a hotel.
Honest note: nine keys means no resort grounds, no pool scene, no kids' club — the amenity is privacy itself. Wrong tool for a classic family beach trip; unmatched for a milestone with a group.
Beyond Maui & Oahu — and a correction
For trips extending to the neighbor islands: Four Seasons Hualalai and the reborn Rosewood Kona Village (reopened 2023) lead the Big Island, and Mauna Lani (Auberge) remains the design pick on the Kohala Coast. On Kauai, note a correction to our earlier version: the St. Regis Princeville and 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay are the same building — the St. Regis closed in 2020 and reopened as 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay in 2023. We previously listed them as two hotels; there is one, and it books under the 1 Hotel flag.
Resort fees: the Hawaii math
Branded resorts charge $40–65 nightly (Grand Wailea $55; big Waikiki resorts around $59–61), and Hawaii's stacked taxes add roughly 18.7% on Oahu — so a "$59 fee" is really about $70. Four Seasons charges no resort fee at either property in this guide, which quietly saves a family around $500 on a week. Factor fees into every comparison; they routinely reorder the value ranking.
When to visit
- April–May and September–November: the value windows — ideal weather, thinner crowds, lower rates.
- December–March: peak season and peak pricing; humpback whales off Maui make it worth it once.
- June–August: family high season; book the Wailea resorts many months out.
