Pet-friendly luxury hotels have moved from rare to standard. Most major luxury brands now welcome dogs. The variation is in how welcoming, what fees apply, and what's included.

What changed

Three forces. First, post-pandemic dog ownership grew sharply, particularly among the luxury travel demographic. Second, hotel brands began offering pet-amenity programmes (Four Seasons "Four Paws," Kimpton free-pet policy, Rosewood pet menus) as differentiation. Third, the dog-friendly travel category became a marketing wedge.

The result: pet-friendly is no longer the exception. The exceptions are the no-pet hotels.

The categories

1. No fee, all sizes welcome

Kimpton (most properties), Loews (Loews Loves Pets programme), some Rosewood properties. The most welcoming.

2. Fee, weight limits

Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, typically $50-$150 fee, 25-50 lb weight limit. Standard luxury.

3. Pet-amenity programme

Four Seasons (welcome amenity, water bowls, beds), Ritz-Carlton (pet menu, dog walking), some Mandarin Oriental properties.

4. No-pet (refuses)

Some traditional European hotels (some Aman properties, some boutique properties). Always confirm.

Standard amenities at pet-friendly luxury hotels

  • Welcome amenity for the pet (treats, water bowl, ID tag)
  • Pet bed in the room
  • Dog walking service (typically $15-$30 per walk)
  • Dog menu at restaurants
  • Pet-sitting (some properties, additional cost)

What to ask before booking

  • Pet fee (one-time vs. per-night)
  • Weight limit
  • Number of pets allowed
  • Are pets allowed in dining areas? (Most yes, on patios)
  • Pet-sitting available?
  • Dog parks nearby?

US vs. European patterns

US hotels are generally pet-friendly with fees and weight limits. European hotels vary widely, Italian and French hotels are often very pet-friendly (some allow restaurants), German and Swiss hotels less so. UK hotels have specific historic patterns.

Five rules for traveling with pets

  1. Always book direct and call to confirm, third-party bookings often miss pet flags
  2. Bring your pet's bed/blanket from home, comfort transition
  3. Pre-walk the dog before check-in, calmer first impression
  4. Request ground-floor or near-elevator room
  5. Tip housekeeping extra, pet rooms are extra work

The full pet-friendly luxury ecosystem is covered across US pet-friendly hotels and European pet-friendly hotels.

Frequently asked questions

Last updated May 15, 2026

Which luxury hotels are the most pet-friendly?
Four Seasons (all properties allow dogs under brand-wide policy, with curated amenities per location), Rosewood, The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Kimpton (every property pet-friendly with no surcharge), Hotel Bel-Air, and most Auberge Resorts. Aman is selective by property; St. Regis varies; Ritz-Carlton is property-specific.
How much do luxury hotels charge for pets?
Range is $0 (Kimpton, Loews) to $250 per stay (Aman, Six Senses where pets are accepted). Most luxury properties land at $75, $150 per stay. Watch for cleaning fees disclosed at check-out rather than at booking, confirm the pet fee structure in writing before arrival.
Are there weight limits at pet-friendly hotels?
Most cap at 50, 75 pounds for in-room stays; larger dogs are often welcome in villa-style accommodation. Hotel Bel-Air and Le Pavillon are dog-friendly without weight caps. Resort properties are typically more permissive than urban hotels, where local fire code and elevator access drive the limit.
Do pet-friendly hotels provide pet amenities?
At the luxury tier, yes: dog bed, ceramic food/water bowls, branded leash, treats on arrival, walking maps, and concierge access to dog walkers and groomers. Premium properties (Four Seasons, Rosewood) often arrange in-room dining for pets with a curated dog menu, Four Seasons properties run a $35, $50 dog menu prepared by the property chef.
Can you bring cats to luxury hotels?
Yes at most pet-friendly hotels, though it's less commonly advertised. The same fee structure applies. Cats stay in-room without exception (no lobby, restaurant, or pool deck access). Carriers required during housekeeping; confirm at booking.
