The Hotel

Tambo del Inka opened in 2010 as the first internationally-flagged five-star resort in the Sacred Valley, Marriott's Luxury Collection placement in the middle of the Urubamba River corridor between Pisac and Ollantaytambo. The property occupies 36,000 square metres of riverside grounds on the eastern edge of Urubamba town, immediately beside the PeruRail Sacred Valley track. The single most consequential decision the developer Inversiones la Rioja made was negotiating a private station, Estación Tambo del Inka, directly on the property, giving the hotel exclusive Vistadome and Sacred Valley service to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) without the road transfer to Ollantaytambo that every other Sacred Valley hotel requires. The hotel was acquired by Marriott in 2016 as part of the Starwood transaction; a comprehensive 2022, 2023 renovation refreshed every guest room and added the riverside Kiri suites.

The 128 rooms are arranged in low-rise wings around the central river-facing courtyard. Deluxe Rooms (the standard) run a generous 42 square metres with king or twin beds, a separate sitting area, and a private balcony or patio looking onto the Andean foothills or the Urubamba gardens; Premium and Junior Suite categories add a fireplace and river views; the Tambo Suite is the headline unit, with a wraparound terrace and the strongest mountain prospect on the property. The 2023 refresh replaced soft furnishings, upgraded bathrooms with rainfall showers and dual vanities, and added the climate-control upgrades that the Sacred Valley climate (cool dry days, cold dry nights) genuinely requires. Décor is restrained Andean, natural wood, hand-loomed textiles, alpaca throws, original Cusqueña art reproductions, without the heavy-themed reading that some Sacred Valley hotels adopt.

The Hawa restaurant is the all-day venue and is rated among the Sacred Valley's most serious kitchens; the menu draws on the hotel's own kitchen-garden and the Andean produce network, quinoa, native potatoes, alpaca, river trout from the Urubamba, interpreted in a contemporary Peruvian register. Kiri offers casual lunch and dinner on the river terrace; the bar serves the Peruvian pisco programme. The hotel's 1,200-square-metre spa is the largest in the Sacred Valley and the most considered wellness facility within several hours of Cusco, an indoor-outdoor heated pool, sauna, steam, eight treatment rooms, and a programme of Andean-derived therapies (coca-leaf, eucalyptus, hot-stone with river rocks). The pool runs uniquely at this altitude as a year-round heated space, indoor-outdoor under a glass canopy.

For travellers building a Machu Picchu trip the Tambo del Inka is the most logistically intelligent base in Peru. The altitude advantage over Cusco is substantial, sleeping at 2,870m versus 3,400m is the difference between altitude headaches and no altitude symptoms for most arrivals, and the private train station collapses the most logistically fraught part of the Sacred Valley itinerary (the Ollantaytambo road transfer) into a 90-second walk from suite to platform. For honeymoons, family stays, and wellness retreats where the Cusco altitude is genuinely difficult, this is the booking.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Sacred Valley honeymoon brief, couples who want Machu Picchu without the Cusco altitude, books here. A Premium Room or Junior Suite for a five-night stay, the private train to Machu Picchu from the hotel's own station, and the Hawa dinner-for-two on the river terrace deliver the version of Peru that does not involve oxygen tanks.

Wellness Retreat

The 1,200-square-metre Kallpa Spa is the strongest wellness proposition in the southern Peruvian Andes, the heated indoor-outdoor pool runs year-round, the treatment menu draws genuinely from Andean herbal traditions, and the property's yoga programme uses the riverside platform at first light. For a wellness retreat anchored in altitude adaptation and Andean tradition, this is the booking.

Family Holiday

The property is the most family-functional five-star in the southern Peruvian Andes, connecting rooms, a supervised kids' programme, river-rafting and horseback riding from the property, and the family-friendly Machu Picchu day with the train leaving from the hotel's own station. Children adapt to altitude faster at 2,870m than at Cusco's 3,400m.
