Likuliku Lagoon Resort sits on the northern shore of Malolo Island in the Mamanuca Group, twenty-five kilometres west of Nadi International Airport. The property opened in 2007 and is wholly owned and operated by the Whitton family, the Fijian-Australian dynasty that has held the Malolo Island concession since the 1970s and that owns the neighbouring Malolo Island Resort and the dive operator Tropical Expeditions. The Whittons designed Likuliku specifically to be the country's first authentic overwater accommodation: ten bures (the Fijian word for a traditional hardwood house) built on stilts over the lagoon by carpenters from the village of Solevu on Malolo, using the same techniques the village has used for centuries, woven palm-fibre wall panels, hand-cut hardwood beams, vetiver-grass thatch, no metal fixings in any visible structure.
The accommodation breaks down into three categories. The ten Overwater Bures (the headline units) are 75-square-metre stilted bures with private steps directly into the lagoon, an outdoor day bed on the deck, an indoor sunken Japanese-style soaking tub looking through floor-to-ceiling glass at the reef, and the canonical Fijian overwater experience. The Deluxe Beachfront Bures (29 units, including 11 with private plunge pools added in the 2019 refurbishment) are the beach-side category, full-size bures with sliding glass walls and direct beach paths. There are no children at any category: Likuliku is the only adults-only property in the Whitton portfolio and the only adults-only luxury resort in Fiji.
Dining is at two restaurants, Fijiana, the main all-day venue with a Fijian-Pacific-rim menu and daily-changing a la carte choices; and Saluwaki, the smaller fine-dining concept room with a degustation menu. The rate is full-board (three meals per day) including all soft drinks; beer, house wine and house cocktails are also included at most rate categories. The resort sits inside a private marine sanctuary that the Whittons have funded since 2007, the Likuliku Marine Sanctuary, a no-take zone of approximately 50 hectares around the resort that has been credibly documented as one of the fastest reef-recovery sites in the western Pacific. Snorkelling directly from the bure decks is one of the property's central propositions.
Access is by daily catamaran from Port Denarau (45 minutes), seaplane (12 minutes) or helicopter; the catamaran is included in the full-board rate. Most stays are between five and ten nights; honeymoon stays are typically seven. The property remains the country's strongest single brand for Fijian overwater bures and the canonical Mamanuca address for travellers who specifically want the South Pacific overwater experience without flying to Bora Bora or Moorea.
