"The most reliably warm welcome on Fogo Island, a Main Street B&B where the breakfast is made to order, the host knows where the icebergs are this morning, and the room rate leaves you change for a punt charter."

The Hotel

Peg's Inn, known on the island as Peg's Place, sits at 60 Main Street in the village of Fogo, the largest of the eleven communities on Fogo Island and the principal settlement at the south end of the island, looking out across Fogo Harbour to the Notre Dame Bay. The village was settled in the 1680s by English fishermen, was the island's commercial centre for two centuries of the cod fishery, and remains the island's administrative and grocery hub, the school, the small grocery, the medical clinic and the harbour wharf are all within walking distance of the inn. Peg's Place has operated as a B&B in the family home for the past two decades and is one of the longest-established working hospitality businesses on the island outside the Fogo Island Inn.

The property is a homey six-bedroom dwelling arranged across two storeys with a small private deck for guests at the rear of the property. Rooms split across configurations: a couple of larger queens with harbour-view windows, smaller doubles on the second floor, and a few entry-tier singles. Some of the rooms have private entrances from the small deck, useful for travellers who keep odd hours during the long summer light or who are arriving on a late ferry, and all rooms have en-suite bathrooms (compact but clean, with locally-stocked toiletries). Free WiFi is consistent throughout the property, which on Fogo Island is not a given. The hosts live in a separate section of the property, available throughout the day and the evening but without the constant presence that some heritage B&Bs default to.

The hospitality is the central proposition. Breakfasts are made to order, eggs in any preparation, locally-cured back bacon, fresh bread from the village bakery, and the partridgeberry and bakeapple jams the inn is locally known for. The owners hold a deep, generationally-rooted knowledge of the island's hiking trails (Brimstone Head and the Lion's Den both within ten minutes' drive), the museums (the Bleak House on the harbour, the Tilting cultural society's heritage walks), the iceberg-spotting routes during the May-June season, and the where-and-when of every parish supper and traditional-music night on the island. The on-the-ground intelligence is materially better than any algorithmic concierge could supply.

For Fogo Island travellers whose budget is under CAD 200 per night, and who are coming for the place, the hikes, the heritage walks, and the icebergs rather than for the architecture and tasting menus of the Inn, Peg's Inn is the most reliable booking on the island. It is not a luxury hotel. It is a clean, well-run, warmly-hosted B&B in the island's largest village, with a working knowledge of every trail, charter and parish supper that matters. For three or four nights as the value half of a Fogo Island trip, or as an in-and-out two-night stay for travellers driving up from Gander, it is the booking that delivers the most island per dollar.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

Solo travellers will find Peg's Inn one of the most quietly competent solo-friendly stays in Atlantic Canada. The hosts know how to look after a guest who is here for the place rather than for a partner, breakfast on your own schedule, deep tips on the day's hike or charter, and the practical knowledge that a Wednesday-night session at the local lounge is the right place to spend the evening. The harbour-view queen rooms are the bookings.

Family Holiday

For families travelling Fogo Island on a non-Inn budget, particularly with older children and teenagers who can absorb a heritage-and-hiking week, Peg's Inn can accommodate a four-or-five-person family across two adjoining rooms on the second floor. Within walking distance: the small grocery, the harbour, the Bleak House museum. Within a fifteen-minute drive: Brimstone Head, the Tilting heritage walks, the punt-tour wharves. The hosts will adjust the breakfast for a fussy eight-year-old without comment.

Anniversary

A modest-budget Fogo Island anniversary works particularly well at Peg's Inn, the harbour-view queen room, a private-deck entrance, the hosts' partridgeberry jam at breakfast, and a tasting-menu dinner at the Fogo Island Inn (a CAD 200/head splurge from outside) twenty minutes' drive away in Joe Batt's Arm. The split keeps the total cost defensible while still landing the island's headline dining experience.
