The Penz family's second Innsbruck hotel, opened end-2017 at the address that gives the property its name, Maria-Theresien-Strasse 12, three hundred metres south of the Goldenes Dachl, 120 rooms across six floors over a contemporary spa, sauna and fitness centre.
"The Penz family's larger and warmer twin, the same design-hotel grammar as the Penz, with the spa and the gym and the family-suite floor that the Penz does not have, and the address that should have been a thirty-year wait for a building on Maria-Theresien."
Stage 12 opened at the end of 2017 as the Penz family's second Innsbruck property, the larger, more amenity-complete sibling to The Penz Hotel two streets west. The building is the early-twentieth-century structure at Maria-Theresien-Strasse 12 (the address gives the hotel its name), comprehensively redeveloped behind the preserved historic facade. The pedestrianised Maria-Theresien-Strasse is Innsbruck's main north-south Old Town axis, the Annasäule (the 1706 votive column to St Anna) sits sixty metres south of the entrance and the Goldenes Dachl is a three-minute walk north. The MICHELIN Guide added Stage 12 to its hotel listings in 2023, the only contemporary Innsbruck hotel currently on the Guide.
The 120 rooms run across six upper floors and present in five categories, Comfort, Superior, Deluxe, Junior Suite, and the headline Stage Suites on the upper floors. The design grammar is the same as the Penz's: a restrained contemporary Italian-Tirolean palette of oak, brushed metal, off-white linen and stone, with the bathrooms in marble-look porcelain and rain showers in every category. The bedroom windows are sound-proofed double glazing onto the pedestrianised street, so the noise from one of Austria's busiest shopping streets resolves to silence indoors. The Stage Suites on floors five and six add separate sitting rooms, free-standing baths, and the better mountain-aspect windows: north toward the Nordkette or south toward the Patscherkofel.
The spa floor and the fitness centre are what distinguishes Stage 12 from The Penz. The spa runs a Finnish dry sauna, a steam room, an aroma cabin, treatment rooms for massage and beauty services, and a small relaxation room, modest by the standards of an Alpine resort hotel, but the most considered urban wellness offer in Innsbruck. The fitness centre is properly equipped, Technogym, free weights, cardio, and runs 24-hour access for guests. The ground-floor Stage Bar & Lounge handles breakfast, all-day bar service, light lunch and the after-work cocktail program; the courtyard garden behind opens for summer service.
Stage 12 is the Innsbruck hotel for travellers who want the central city address but with the family-and-wellness amenities the older Old Town hotels can't fit. The Junior Suites handle a family of four; the Stage Suite floor handles small group stays; the spa floor handles the wellness-and-walking weekend; the position handles the cultural break. For the corporate stay with after-hours fitness needs, for the ski-season weekend with the Patscherkofel cable-car ten minutes away, or for the multi-generational family stop on a wider Tirol trip, Stage 12 is the most considered modern hotel in Innsbruck after the Penz itself.
Stage 12 is Innsbruck's strongest contemporary family hotel, Junior Suites and Stage Suites that fit a family of four properly (separate sitting rooms, two real bathrooms in the upper categories), connecting-room configurations, the spa and fitness centre, and the position on the pedestrianised Maria-Theresien-Strasse means no streets to cross to get to dinner. The Hungerburgbahn, the Alpenzoo, and Schloss Ambras are all under twenty minutes' transit.
For the longer-stay business trip, a working week, a conference run, a relocation week, Stage 12 outperforms the Penz on the secondary fit: 24-hour fitness centre, full spa, larger working desks in Superior and above, and the lobby's Stage Bar runs as an informal client-meeting room from late afternoon. The MICHELIN Guide listing matters for corporate booking policies that need a recognised standard.
Stage 12 is not a destination wellness hotel, for that the Tirol has the Stanglwirt and the Aqua Dome, but as an urban-wellness base for a four-day Innsbruck-and-Nordkette break it is well-judged: morning sauna, afternoon hike on the Nordkette or the Patscherkofel, evening spa, dinner at Sitzwohl. The booking pairs well with the Innsbruck Card transit pass.
