Fairmont Monte Carlo

"On Sunday at the end of May the F1 cars take the corner four metres below your balcony. Every other week of the year, the corner is the most photographed driveway in motor sport. The hotel's position is, frankly, the hotel."

The Hotel

The Fairmont Monte Carlo opened in 1975 as the Loews Monte-Carlo on land that had previously been a small fishing inlet on the Avenue des Spélugues. The hotel's distinguishing feature was set at the construction stage: the building was cantilevered over the corner of the Grand Prix circuit known since 1929 as the Station Hairpin (because it sat below the old railway station). When the Loews took the air rights, the Automobile Club de Monaco redrew the corner around the new building's foundations and renamed it, first the Loews Hairpin, then (when the property became a Fairmont in 2005) the Fairmont Hairpin. It remains the slowest corner on the Formula 1 calendar and the only corner of any Grand Prix circuit whose name is owned by a hotel.

The 596 rooms and suites make the Fairmont the largest hotel by room count in Monaco. The room categories run from City View through Hairpin View, Mediterranean Garden, Sea View, and a series of Fairmont Gold and Suite categories on the upper floors. The Hairpin Rooms, the property's hero category, have private balconies that look directly down to the corner; on Grand Prix Sunday in late May, the cars pass below at the slowest racing speed on the entire F1 calendar. For the other fifty-one weeks of the year the corner is one of the principality's signature photographs. A 2017, 2019 renovation refreshed every room category, brought the bathrooms to a contemporary standard, and added the Fairmont Gold private lounge on the seventh floor.

Dining is led by Nobu Monte-Carlo, Nobu Matsuhisa's first European hotel residency, opened in 2009, which occupies the eighth-floor terrace overlooking the harbour. The room is the principality's reliable address for the Nobu repertoire (the black cod miso, the rock shrimp tempura, the yellowtail jalapeño) and for the post-dinner crowd circulating between the casino and the Casa Beach Club next door. Saphir 24 Lifestyle Bistro & Bar is the all-day venue on the ground floor; Cours Saleya is the breakfast room with views of the port; the Horizon Deck rooftop is the F1-week venue par excellence. The fifth-floor rooftop pool, heated, sea-facing, and the largest hotel rooftop pool in the principality, is the property's daytime centrepiece.

The position is the proposition. The Fairmont sits between the Casino Monte-Carlo (three minutes on foot), the Larvotto beach (six minutes), and Port Hercule (four minutes), with direct access to the principality's tunnel network and the Spélugues escalators. The scale of the property, 596 rooms, twenty meeting rooms, an 800-person ballroom, makes it the principality's default corporate and incentive venue; the Grand Prix and Monaco Yacht Show paddock and pit-team blocks are based here every year. The hotel runs more efficiently than its 1975 build suggests, but the registers are the SBM palaces': for guests who want the principality's defining address book, the Hôtel de Paris and the Hermitage hold it. For guests who want the principality's defining view and the broadest range of services in a single building, the Fairmont is the answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Bachelor / Bachelorette

For a Monte-Carlo bachelor or bachelorette weekend the Fairmont is the default. The Horizon Deck rooftop pool, the Nobu terrace, the Casino under three minutes' walk, the Twiga and Buddha Bar within two minutes, the tunnel to the Larvotto beach. Group bookings on the Fairmont Gold floor get the seventh-floor private lounge; the hotel handles 20-plus-room blocks reflexively.

Business

For Monaco business the Fairmont is the operational answer when the meeting matters more than the lobby photograph. Twenty meeting rooms; the largest hotel ballroom in the principality (Salle d'Or, 800 capacity); the Fairmont Gold lounge; full A/V; and the only Monaco hotel large enough to host an industry conference end-to-end on a single floor plate. Yacht Show week and the F1 paddock crowd run their hospitality from here.

Family Holiday

The rooftop sea-view pool is the principality's best family swim, heated all year, lifeguarded, with the Larvotto beach a four-minute tunnel walk away. The hotel's connecting Garden View rooms accommodate families neatly; the casino is far enough not to set the tone. The Sea Lounge daybeds, the Nobu kids menu, and the Oceanographic Museum nine minutes away handle the daytime brief.
