"Twenty-two years on, still the hotel by which every other resort in the Gulf is quietly measured. The 103-metre long pool is the photograph; the staff-to-room ratio is the reason guests keep returning."

The Hotel

The Chedi Muscat opened in 2003 as the first contemporary luxury hotel in the Sultanate of Oman, commissioned during the early-period property reforms of the late Sultan Qaboos and developed by the Bahrain-based investor group with GHM (General Hotel Management, the Singapore-based operator behind The Setai Miami Beach and the Datai Langkawi) as the operator. The architectural brief was uncompromising and prophetic: traditional Omani fortress-and-mosque vocabulary executed in a clean contemporary register by the Indonesian architect Jaya Ibrahim, domes, courtyards, white stucco, dark teak, water-as-architecture. The 21-acre site sits on a private stretch of Al Ghubra beach in the western suburbs of Muscat, halfway between the airport and the old town, in a quarter that has since become the city's premier hotel district.

There are 162 rooms and villas across the grounds, including 31 suites and villas. Standard Chedi Club Suites (the entry category, recently re-sized) are 33 square metres with the brand's signature high ceiling, oversized windows, queen bed, daily-changed flower arrangements, and the open-plan limestone bathroom with rain shower and Acqua di Parma toiletries that the property has used since opening. Chedi Club Suites with terraces and the Garden Villa categories sit further into the grounds; the Beach Villa categories are right at the sand. The named villas, the Royal Villa and the Suite, are the headline units with private gardens, private pools, and dedicated butler service. The 2018, 2020 renovation programme refreshed every soft furnishing, retiled every bathroom, and modernised the climate-control systems while preserving the Jaya-designed envelope intact.

There are three pools. The Long Pool, 103 metres of black-bottomed water bisecting the central garden axis, is one of the most-photographed swimming pools in Asian luxury hotels and was, when it opened, the longest pool in the Middle East. The Serai Pool is the secluded adults-only pool by the Chedi spa. The Beach Pool sits on the sand looking out to the Gulf of Oman. The dining inventory is unusually deep for a 162-room hotel: The Restaurant is the four-kitchen all-day venue (Arabic, Asian, Indian, Mediterranean cooked to order from open kitchens at every meal); The Beach Restaurant is the seafood pavilion on the sand; The Arabian Courtyard is the open-air Omani-Levantine venue under date palms; The Lobby is the all-day patisserie and tea room. The Chedi Spa runs Asian and Omani-tradition treatments across thirteen suites including a hammam and watsu pool.

Service is the property's central proposition and the line that defines its position. GHM has run the property since opening with a staff-to-room ratio reportedly higher than any other Muscat hotel; the long-tenure rate among the senior team is exceptional for the region; the concierge desk has a depth of relationships across the Sultanate's wadi guides, dhow operators, and desert outfitters that no contemporary competitor can match. The location is the second proposition, 21 acres of private beach and date-palm garden in the Al Ghubra residential quarter, with the Muscat International Airport fifteen minutes by car, the Royal Opera House twenty minutes, the old town and the Mutrah Souq forty-five minutes. For Muscat first-time visitors and for repeat guests building a city-and-resort itinerary, the Chedi remains the structurally complete answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Muscat honeymoons the Chedi is the obvious answer. A Beach Villa with the sand at the front step and the Long Pool a five-minute walk back through the garden; dinner at The Beach Restaurant; the Chedi Spa hammam ritual; a desert excursion to the Wahiba Sands or a dhow charter through Bandar Khayran on a day trip, the property scales the brief at every intensity. The Royal Villa for the milestone version of the same booking.

Anniversary

The Chedi handles anniversary stays at every intensity, a Chedi Club Suite for a quiet weekend, a Garden Villa for a milestone, the Royal Villa for the major one. The Long Pool at dawn, the Arabian Courtyard for dinner under date palms, the Chedi Spa for a couples watsu session, a private dhow at sunset off the Mutrah corniche, the senior team handles the brief reflexively. Twenty-two years of repeat anniversary trade is the most reliable signal a hotel can offer.

Wellness Retreat

The Chedi Spa runs structured five- and seven-day programmes around hammam, Asian therapies, traditional Omani frankincense treatments, and yoga in the dedicated open-air pavilion; the dietary side is handled across the four restaurant kitchens to whatever protocol the spa prescribes; the 21-acre grounds and the Long Pool support a wellness week that doesn't feel monastic. Calmer and more grounded than the Gulf's more performative spa resorts.
