The Hotel

Rosewood Miyakojima opened on 1 March 2025, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts' first property in Japan and the brand's eleventh Asian opening since 2018. The site is a private peninsula on the northern coast of Miyakojima, twenty-five minutes by car from Miyako Airport, surrounded on three sides by undeveloped white-sand beach and offshore reef. Architect Tetsuo Goto worked with Studio Piet Boon (Amsterdam) on the master plan, which preserves the existing Ryukyu pine and gajumaru fig groves and stages the 55 villas in two low arcs along the coastline. The result reads as a contemporary translation of an Okinawan island village rather than a corporate resort, pitched roofs in natural cedar, limestone walls, and crushed-coral courtyards.

All 55 keys are villas (Rosewood elected to build no traditional hotel rooms) ranging from 110-square-metre Ocean View Villas with their own pool, garden, and outdoor terrace, through 195-square-metre Ocean Front Villas with direct beach access, up to the headline Rosewood Pavilion, two bedrooms, 380 square metres, a 20-metre lap pool, and a private chef's kitchen. Every villa includes a Japanese ofuro soaking tub, a separate dressing room, and the Rosewood Asaya spa-amenities suite. Interiors mix sleek bleached oak joinery with Yachimun ceramics from Yomitan, kasuri textiles, and Ryukyu lacquerware from the Aragaki workshop in Naha.

The dining programme runs across three signature outlets: Chef's Kitchen (a 14-seat omakase counter under Tokyo chef Hiroyuki Onishi, opened from launch with one Michelin star anticipated for the next guide), Sansai (Okinawan-Mediterranean by chef Lou Iwanaka), and Hama (the all-day beachfront grill). The Asaya spa is the resort's centrepiece, Rosewood's 1,400-square-metre wellness vocabulary applied to a Miyako site, with eight treatment pavilions, a 25-metre indoor lap pool, hammam, saltwater flotation tank, and a Ryukyu-medicine consultation room. The kids club programme is the most considered on the island, with daily Yachimun pottery workshops and reef-snorkel introductions from age six.

The position is the structural advantage. Miyakojima's larger resorts crowd the Yonahamaehama and Shigira coasts on the south of the island; Rosewood took an unbroken peninsula on the lightly-developed north, with the closest neighbouring property a fifteen-minute drive. The beach in front of the resort is private and supervised, the reef is intact, and the snorkel quality from the property is the best of any Miyako resort. The room rate is the highest in Okinawa Prefecture, but it bought the best site, and Rosewood spent it on the right things.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Miyako honeymoons Rosewood is the obvious 2025-onwards answer. Every villa has its own pool and gated entrance, so the privacy of a stay here is unmatched on the island. Book the 195-square-metre Ocean Front Villa with the direct beach gate and the Asaya couples package; Chef's Kitchen at dinner is the most refined honeymoon course menu in the prefecture.

Anniversary

For milestone anniversaries the Rosewood Pavilion is the room, two bedrooms, a 20-metre pool, a private chef's kitchen, and the resort's most considered private-dining setup on the cliff terrace. Asaya runs a 180-minute Ryukyu medicine couples ritual that is the strongest single spa booking in Okinawa today; the resort handles the surprise-and-celebration choreography with the confidence of a property that opened ready.

Family Holiday

For families the Ocean Front Villa configuration (two bedrooms, private pool, gated garden) is the booking, with the kids club programme handling six-to-twelve-year-olds across pottery, snorkelling and a Ryukyu-cuisine cooking class. Connecting villas are available; the Rosewood Pavilion handles multigenerational groups up to eight without compromise.
