Rasa Sayang, the Malay phrase translates loosely as "the feeling of love", opened in 1973 on a thirty-acre coconut estate at the eastern end of Batu Ferringhi beach, on the northern coast of Penang island. Shangri-La took over operation in 1979, rebuilt the property twice through the following four decades, and most recently completed a comprehensive re-master in 2017 that introduced the two-wing structure that defines the resort today: a Garden Wing for families with the kids' club and the larger pool, and a Rasa Wing reserved for guests aged 18 and over, with a separate quiet pool, club lounge, and dining room. The two wings share the spa, the beach, and the gardens, but otherwise function as parallel hotels under one address.
The 304 rooms divide 254/50 between the Garden and Rasa Wings. Garden Wing rooms are 40, 55 m², most with private balconies onto the lawn or the sea; the Garden Family Suite (95 m²) is the standard for connecting families with two children. Rasa Wing rooms (50 m² and up) include club-lounge access (breakfast, evening drinks, all-day refreshments), turndown service, and the use of the adults-only Rasa Premier Pool with a separate beach access.
