Belmond Maroma was originally Maroma Resort & Spa, which opened in 1995 on Maroma Beach, a Riviera Maya beach repeatedly identified by Travel + Leisure and other travel-press surveys as among the world's most beautiful, and was acquired by Belmond (LVMH's heritage-hotel collection) in 2017. A comprehensive year-long restoration closed the property in late 2022, and Belmond reopened in December 2023 with completely refurbished rooms, a redesigned spa, and an updated culinary programme.
The 73 rooms split between Garden View Casitas, Beachfront Casitas, and the multi-bedroom Casitas (one- to four-bedroom configurations). The post-restoration interiors are by Tara Bernerd & Partners, the design firm behind several of the more refined recent luxury hotel restorations, with Maya-influenced materials, hand-carved local stone, and the integrated tropical garden architecture that has been Maroma's identity since 1995. Every room has direct beachfront or garden views.
The grounds, the 8-acre property with the Maroma Beach allocation, the Spa (post-restoration, with new architecture by Bernerd), the gardens, the heated swimming pool, and the boutique, are the property's defining advantage. Dining was reinvented in the restoration. Casa Mayor reinvents traditional Mexican flavours with sustainably sourced seafood and dishes such as rich chocolate cake with Oaxacan black mole, while Freddy's Bar is the all-day beachside hideaway for cocktails, live music and Mexican craft beer, joined by the Bambuco Bar. Service is the polished Belmond standard delivered by a largely Mexican team that mostly returned after the restoration. The 2022-2023 restoration by Tara Bernerd & Partners refreshed the rooms and public spaces while keeping the low-rise, garden-woven Maya-influenced architecture that has defined Maroma since 1995, so the property reads as renewed rather than rebuilt, and much of its loyal staff and returning guests came back with it.
Wellness runs deep. The Maroma Spa was rebuilt in the restoration and leans on Maya healing traditions, with a temazcal ceremony, a resident shaman and a menu of culturally grounded treatments alongside international therapies, all set in Bernerd's new architecture. Days settle into an easy rhythm of beach, spa, sunrise yoga and long dinners, and the resort arranges cenote swims, Mayan-site excursions and boat trips for guests who want to venture beyond the sand.
Belmond Maroma sits firmly in ultra-luxury territory, with casita rates and dining prices to match, so it is a special-occasion resort rather than a value beach break. Its intimate scale is a strength for couples but means fewer restaurants, pools and activities than a large resort, and families wanting extensive kids' facilities may prefer a bigger property. Like the whole Riviera Maya coast, Maroma can see seasonal sargassum seaweed in summer, which the resort actively manages but cannot fully control, and the three-night minimum and peak-season pricing reward planning ahead. For the beach, the restoration and Belmond's polish, though, it remains a benchmark on this coast.
