Restored 73-room Belmond hotel on Maroma Beach, the Caribbean beach often ranked among the world's best. Reopened December 2023 after a year-long restoration.
"73-room Belmond on Maroma Beach, the Caribbean beach often ranked among the world's best. Reopened December 2023 after a year-long restoration."
Belmond Maroma was originally Maroma Resort & Spa, which opened in 1995 on Maroma Beach, a Riviera Maya beach repeatedly identified by Travel + Leisure and other travel-press surveys as among the world's most beautiful, and was acquired by Belmond (LVMH's heritage-hotel collection) in 2017. A comprehensive year-long restoration closed the property in late 2022, and Belmond reopened in December 2023 with completely refurbished rooms, a redesigned spa, and an updated culinary programme.
The 73 rooms split between Garden View Casitas, Beachfront Casitas, and the multi-bedroom Casitas (one- to four-bedroom configurations). The post-restoration interiors are by Tara Bernerd & Partners, the design firm behind several of the more refined recent luxury hotel restorations, with Maya-influenced materials, hand-carved local stone, and the integrated tropical garden architecture that has been Maroma's identity since 1995. Every room has direct beachfront or garden views.
The grounds, the 8-acre property with the Maroma Beach allocation, the Spa (post-restoration, with new architecture by Bernerd), the gardens, the heated swimming pool, and the boutique, are the property's defining advantage. The post-restoration upgrades to the spa and the dining are particularly substantial, and the property's pre-restoration loyal-returning-guest base has reportedly returned to confirm the maintained character.
Dining was reinvented in the restoration. Woodend by Curtis Stone is the headline beachside restaurant, where the Australian chef cooks seafood and produce over an open fire to jaw-dropping ocean views, and it now features in the Michelin Guide. Casa Mayor reinvents traditional Mexican flavours with sustainably sourced seafood and dishes such as rich chocolate cake with Oaxacan black mole, while Freddy's Bar is the all-day beachside hideaway for cocktails, live music and Mexican craft beer, joined by the Bambuco Bar. Service is the polished Belmond standard delivered by a largely Mexican team that mostly returned after the restoration. Belmond Maroma is the Riviera Maya's original luxury hotel, reborn, for travellers who want one of the Caribbean's most beautiful beaches with Belmond's heritage-restoration discipline.
The Riviera Maya honeymoon at Maroma Beach. Book a Beachfront Casita. The Maroma Beach is the property's defining advantage, the white sand and turquoise water are exceptional even by Caribbean standards. Dinner at Woodend by Curtis Stone; the Maroma Spa; the beachfront sunrise yoga. The post-restoration polish (December 2023 reopening) delivered the upgrade the property's character needed.
For anniversaries the multi-bedroom Casitas are the right scale. The Maroma Beach setting and the Belmond planning team's discretion produce a particularly polished milestone-anniversary stay.
Spa Maroma's post-restoration architecture and treatment programme combine Maya-influenced wellness traditions with international luxury spa standards. For travellers who want the wellness component to be culturally grounded with the Caribbean-beach setting.

View Rates & Dates →Maroma Beach is the enduring reason to come. A wide crescent of powder-soft white sand and improbably turquoise water, it has topped world's-best-beach lists for decades, and the resort's compact 73-casita scale on an eight-acre site means it never feels crowded against it. The 2022-2023 restoration by Tara Bernerd & Partners refreshed the rooms and public spaces while keeping the low-rise, garden-woven Maya-influenced architecture that has defined Maroma since 1995, so the property reads as renewed rather than rebuilt, and much of its loyal staff and returning guests came back with it.
Wellness runs deep. The Maroma Spa was rebuilt in the restoration and leans on Maya healing traditions, with a temazcal ceremony, a resident shaman and a menu of culturally grounded treatments alongside international therapies, all set in Bernerd's new architecture. Days settle into an easy rhythm of beach, spa, sunrise yoga and long dinners, and the resort arranges cenote swims, Mayan-site excursions and boat trips for guests who want to venture beyond the sand.
Belmond Maroma sits firmly in ultra-luxury territory, with casita rates and dining prices to match, so it is a special-occasion resort rather than a value beach break. Its intimate scale is a strength for couples but means fewer restaurants, pools and activities than a large resort, and families wanting extensive kids' facilities may prefer a bigger property. Like the whole Riviera Maya coast, Maroma can see seasonal sargassum seaweed in summer, which the resort actively manages but cannot fully control, and the three-night minimum and peak-season pricing reward planning ahead. For the beach, the restoration and Belmond's polish, though, it remains a benchmark on this coast.

Yes. It is the Riviera Maya's original luxury hotel and, since its full Belmond restoration reopened in December 2023, one of its finest, a 73-casita resort on Maroma Beach with refreshed rooms, a rebuilt spa and acclaimed dining. Its intimate scale and exceptional beach make it a leading choice for couples and special occasions.
The headline is Woodend by Curtis Stone, a beachside restaurant cooking seafood and produce over an open fire, now recognised in the Michelin Guide. Casa Mayor serves reinvented traditional Mexican cuisine, and Freddy's Bar is the all-day beachside spot for cocktails, live music and Mexican craft beer, alongside the Bambuco Bar.
The property closed in late 2022 for a comprehensive year-long restoration and reopened in December 2023 with refurbished casitas, a redesigned spa and updated dining, all designed by Tara Bernerd & Partners while preserving Maroma's original low-rise, garden-woven character.
The resort is on Maroma Beach, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, Mexico, about 35 minutes from Cancún International Airport (CUN).
Garden View Casitas typically start around $1,500 per night, Beachfront Casitas from about $2,000, two-bedroom Casitas from around $4,500, and larger multi-bedroom casitas higher still. A three-night minimum applies and peak-season rates climb, so confirm current pricing when booking.
