The 128-room Luxury Collection riverside resort in Urubamba, the only Sacred Valley property with its own private train station to Machu Picchu, an indoor-outdoor heated pool, and a serious 24-hour-staffed spa.
"The only Sacred Valley hotel with its own private train station to Machu Picchu, and the only one large enough to absorb a family of six without compromising on five-star detail."
Tambo del Inka opened in 2010 on a riverside parcel of land in the centre of Urubamba town, designed by Peruvian architect Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica to evoke the stepped masonry of pre-Columbian Andean architecture. The resort joined Marriott's Luxury Collection in 2011 and has, in the years since, become the Sacred Valley's most institutional five-star, the property of choice for Latin American multi-generational family travel, large international groups, and corporate retreats that wouldn't fit at the smaller casita-style competitors. The headline operational fact is the hotel's own private train station: the only Sacred Valley property with PeruRail tracks running directly to its grounds, departing for Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) twice daily.
The 128 keys are organised across four main categories. Deluxe Rooms (45 square metres) are the entry point, with king beds, soaking tubs, walk-in showers, and a private balcony either overlooking the river or facing the central gardens, the river-view rooms are the better booking. Junior Suites add a separate seating area and a larger balcony. The Tambo Suite (110 square metres) is the corner suite on the third floor with a full living room, dining table, separate bedroom, and a wraparound balcony. The Royal Suite (220 square metres) occupies the top-floor corner with two bedrooms, a fireplace lounge, dining for eight, and a private terrace overlooking the Vilcanota River. Every room has the brand's signature Heavenly Bed and high-quality climate control.
Hawa is the main restaurant (note: not to be confused with the Inkaterra Hawa). Run by Marriott Luxury Collection's regional culinary lead with a French-Peruvian fusion brief, it is the resort's strongest dining outlet, Andean tasting menus, an extensive ceviche programme, and a recently strong wine list including a tight Argentine-and-Chilean section. Kiri is the bar, with the valley's strongest pisco-cocktail programme. Hatun-Inti is the relaxed garden-side day-time outlet; in-room dining runs 24 hours. The breakfast (often included with rates) is buffet-format with a strong made-to-order programme and is suited to families travelling with children.
The Hypnoze Spa is the property's primary wellness offer, 1,400 square metres across two floors with a steam room, sauna, ice fountain, hydrotherapy circuit, eight treatment rooms, and a dedicated couples-suite with double-treatment programmes. The indoor-outdoor heated pool is the headline year-round amenity (Sacred Valley nights run cold) and is the only one of its kind in the region. For families the dedicated Kids' Programme, the on-property bicycle rental, the grounds' adjacent riverside walking paths, and the connecting-room availability make Tambo del Inka the right family booking. The private train station is the most operationally significant amenity for any Machu Picchu itinerary: guests check in for their PeruRail Vistadome service at the resort, board the train on the property, and return to their room the same evening without an Ollantaytambo car transfer.
The connecting Deluxe Rooms, Family Suites, on-property Kids' Programme, indoor-outdoor heated pool, and the dedicated bicycle rental make Tambo del Inka the most family-capable Sacred Valley booking. The private train station to Machu Picchu means families with younger children can do the Machu Picchu day without the Ollantaytambo road transfer; the resort's central Urubamba location puts the town's restaurants and the Cusco airport within reasonable distance.
River-view Junior Suites and the Tambo corner suite are the central honeymoon booking; the Hypnoze Spa's double-treatment couples suite and the private candlelit dinners by the river are the in-house anchors. The private train to Machu Picchu is the practical honeymoon advantage, no early-morning Ollantaytambo transfer needed for the Machu Picchu portion of the trip.
The Royal Suite (220 square metres, two bedrooms, fireplace lounge, private terrace) is the major-milestone anniversary booking; the Tambo Suite for a quieter celebration. Hawa at dinner and the Hypnoze Spa's couples programme handle the in-house celebration; the private train and concierge run the Machu Picchu day. Sacred Valley anniversaries lend themselves to longer programmes, five-and-seven-night itineraries are the right format here.
