The Hotel

Suvretta House opened on 21 December 1912 on a 100,000-square-metre forested parcel west of St Moritz village, deliberately set away from the busier lakeshore where the Kulm and the Palace were already established. The founders were the Bon-Niarchos family, whose descendants, the Candrian Catering Group, headed by Hans Candrian, continue to own and operate the hotel today, four generations later. The architectural ambition of the original building was unusual for the era: a Belle Époque château in pale stone with copper-clad turrets, set on its own private hillside meadow, with the Suvretta valley falling away behind. It opened with electricity, central heating, hot and cold running water in every room, and a private telephone exchange, a level of modernity that would have shamed most European city hotels of the time.

The hotel currently runs 181 rooms and suites across the main building and the adjacent Chasellas wing, the largest inventory of any St Moritz grand. The interior decoration is the most rigorously preserved Belle Époque palette in the Engadine, the original grand staircase, the original ballroom, the original Marble Hall, and the public rooms retain the scale that newer competitors cannot match. Standard rooms run roughly 25, 35 square metres; Junior Suites 45, 55; the named suites (Suvretta Suite, Forest Suite, the corner Royal Suite) extend to over 100 square metres. A multi-phase soft renovation completed in 2023 added contemporary climate control and bathroom upgrades across the inventory while preserving the original timber, glasswork, and plaster details intact.

Suvretta is the only St Moritz grand hotel with a private chairlift, the Suvretta lift runs directly from the hotel's ski-room exit up to the Corviglia ski area, making it the only European luxury hotel where the brief "ski in to the cocktail terrace" is meant literally. The Suvretta Snowsports School operates from the ski room; the hotel's own snowcat shuttle handles cross-country and the toboggan run. Restaurants on site include the Grand Restaurant (the original Belle Époque dining room), the Suvretta Stube (the Swiss alpine room), and the Chasellas mountain restaurant at mid-station on the ski hill. The 1,200-square-metre Suvretta Spa runs a 25-metre indoor pool, an outdoor whirlpool with valley views, a children's spa, and a Sisley treatment cabin. The Teen's Club and the Suvretta Kids' Club run a full programme of supervised activities through the season.

The position is the property's central proposition. Suvretta sits on its own private hillside with the Engadine valley falling away to the south-west, the wooded Suvretta forest behind, and no immediate neighbours. The village centre is a five-minute hotel shuttle away; the Corviglia ski area is reached directly from the hotel's own ski room. The Suvretta is the family-grand option in St Moritz, generations of European families have stayed annually for a century, and the most introverted of the four grands by some margin. Standard doubles open at around CHF 690 in shoulder season; the named suites at peak run into the four and five figures.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

Suvretta is the family grand hotel in St Moritz. The private Suvretta chairlift means children ski directly from the hotel's ski room every morning; the Teen's Club, Kids' Club, and supervised children's spa are the most fully developed of the four grands; the connecting and family-suite inventory is the deepest. Families return for generations.

Honeymoon

A Suvretta honeymoon is the introverted version of the St Moritz brief, a Forest or Suvretta Suite with the valley view, the spa's outdoor whirlpool at sunset, the Grand Restaurant's original Belle Époque dining room, and the lift-directly-from-the-hotel ski morning. Less ceremony than the Palace, more space than the Carlton, more quiet than the Kulm.

Wellness Retreat

The Suvretta is the wellness booking for guests who want the high-altitude air, the private forest, and a properly-staffed spa without the village crowd. The 1,200-square-metre spa includes the outdoor whirlpool with the unobstructed Engadine sunset view; multi-day altitude programmes and longevity-focused stays are well established at the property.
