The Hotel

The Mafolie Hotel opened in 1952 on a steep hillside above Charlotte Amalie, the kind of small family-owned Caribbean hotel that the post-war years produced across the islands and that almost none of which survive into the modern era as independent operations. The Harthman family has owned and run the property continuously since opening, now into the second and third generations. The site is at 850 feet of elevation on Mafolie Hill, directly above the western edge of Charlotte Amalie harbor, the position that the hotel was built for in 1952 and that remains its defining asset more than seventy years later. Fifteen minutes from Cyril E. King Airport; five minutes by taxi down to Charlotte Amalie waterfront.

There are 22 guest rooms across the property, plus a single hillside villa. The rooms are small by contemporary standards, Standard Queens at around 200 square feet, Deluxe Kings at 300, Junior Suite Harbour View at 450, but the property has resisted the temptation to consolidate units and pretend to luxury scale. Interiors are unaffected Caribbean, tiled floors, white walls, tropical-print bedding, in-room WiFi, the small refrigerator, and a balcony or terrace on every room. The Junior Suite Harbour View is the headline category, the corner unit with the full harbor view at the rail. The Villa Panoramic View (1,000 square feet, separate living room, full kitchen, the largest private terrace on the property) is the family or honeymoon answer for guests who want apartment space.

The Mafolie Restaurant is the property's secondary draw, an open-air dinner room with the harbor view, locally well-regarded for the conch fritters, the lobster, and the consistently sound wine list. Breakfast is included with the room rate and served on the same terrace. The pool is small (the hotel does not have a beach, the position is the substitute) and the hotel runs a complimentary shuttle to Magens Bay Beach and to Honeymoon Beach on Water Island three times a day. The atmosphere is the kind of unforced Caribbean small-hotel character that the chain-flag resorts cannot replicate.

The position is the central proposition. From the terrace at sunset, Charlotte Amalie harbor is laid out at eye level: the cruise terminal, Bluebeard's Castle, Hassel Island, Water Island, and the western Caribbean. It is one of the genuinely well-known views in the Virgin Islands, the postcard view that the cruise ships sail under without seeing. The compensating variable is that there is no beach at the hotel itself; the Mafolie is a hill hotel with a complimentary shuttle, which is the trade-off for the elevation. For solo travellers, for honeymooners on a deliberately small-scale budget, and for anniversary couples who would rather stay at a 22-room hotel than a 400-room resort, this is the only honest answer on St. Thomas.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

Solo travellers find their way to Mafolie because the property is properly small (22 rooms, the smallest on the island), because the bar at the Mafolie Restaurant works as a single's bar in a way that the big resorts' lobbies do not, and because the staff handle single-room bookings as normal rather than statistically unusual. The harbor-view terrace is the kind of unaccompanied late-afternoon space that the larger resorts cannot replicate at any price.

Anniversary

For an anniversary at the smaller end of the budget, the Junior Suite Harbour View at sunset on the terrace at the Mafolie Restaurant is the small ritual that the trip is built around. The price band runs roughly $300/night at the suite category, the rest of the budget goes into the boat day-charter to St. John and the dinner at Bleuwater across the island if the brief calls for a single splurge night. The smaller property scale is the unforced quality the bigger resorts cannot duplicate.

Honeymoon

Honeymoons at the Mafolie are the deliberately-small-scale version of the brief. The Villa Panoramic View is the working category, 1,000 square feet, full kitchen, the largest private terrace on the property, complete privacy. The complimentary shuttle to Magens Bay Beach (one of the genuinely well-photographed Caribbean beaches) and to Honeymoon Beach on Water Island covers the beach days; the Mafolie Restaurant covers the dinners; the small hotel scale covers the rest.
