Hotel Telegraaf occupies the former Imperial Russian telegraph station built in 1878 on Vene Street, the long cobbled lane that runs north from the Town Hall Square to St. Catherine's Alley and the Dominican Monastery. The building served as Tallinn's primary telegraph and later telephone exchange through the Estonian First Republic and the Soviet period, and was carefully restored and converted to a hotel by the Estonian Reval Hotels group, opening in 2007. The property entered Marriott's Autograph Collection, Marriott's portfolio of independent, design-led hotels, and remains the only Autograph in Estonia.
There are seventy-two rooms and eleven suites, including three standard suites and a single Presidential Suite, spread across five floors and arranged around a glazed-roof central atrium that occupies the courtyard of the original telegraph building. Categories run from compact Deluxe rooms (around 25 square metres) through Premium and Junior Suites to the Presidential. The interiors are Art Deco modernist with Estonian timber accents, silver leaf, dark walnut, pale upholstery, restrained metalwork, designed by Estonian studio Pink and rather more contemporary in feel than the historic façade prepares you for. Most rooms look either onto Vene Street and the medieval Old Town façades opposite, or into the bright central atrium. Bathrooms are marble and good. Beds are excellent.
The Elemis Spa is the property's quiet competitive advantage in Tallinn. Set into the original 19th-century brick cellars under the building, the spa runs an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and a full Elemis treatment menu, the only Elemis brand spa in Estonia and the deepest spa offering at any Tallinn Old Town hotel. Tchaikovsky Restaurant, the property's flagship dining room, runs a Russian-Estonian menu in the central atrium with live chamber music several evenings a week; the lobby bar handles informal dinner; meeting rooms across two floors handle the Marriott corporate book that the brand connection delivers.
The position is the third selling proposition. Vene 9 is seventy metres from the Town Hall Square, two minutes from St. Catherine's Alley (the famous artisan lane), three minutes from the Holy Spirit Church and Schlössle, and five minutes from Pikk Street. The ferry to Helsinki is six minutes by taxi, the airport fifteen. For business travellers, the property does a far bigger Marriott Bonvoy and corporate-meeting trade than Schlössle, the combination of full meeting facilities, a serious spa, a Marriott loyalty footprint, and an Old Town address is unique in Estonia.
For business travellers, the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty footprint, the meeting rooms, the full executive lounge, and the only serious five-star meeting venue inside the Old Town, Telegraaf is the only correct answer in Tallinn. The Premium rooms with extra workspace and the executive-lounge benefits are the right booking. Walking distance to the Estonian Foreign Ministry, the Riigikogu, and the Stenbock House government offices.
For an anniversary in Tallinn where the spa is part of the brief, Telegraaf is the answer. The Elemis cellar spa with the indoor pool runs to a depth that Schlössle and the Three Sisters do not match, and the Junior Suite-plus-spa-package booking is the most efficient anniversary value in the city. Tchaikovsky's chamber-music evenings are a useful set piece.
For a three- or four-night wellness break, Old Town walks, Telliskivi creative district, the Patkuli viewing platform, and a daily Elemis treatment, Telegraaf is the only Tallinn hotel that can put a full Elemis spa programme inside the Old Town. The indoor pool and steam-room circuit in the 19th-century cellars is the kind of environment a wellness traveller actually wants.
