Hacienda Tamarindo is a seventeen-room bed-and-breakfast on a high ridge above the village of Esperanza, built and continuously operated since 1997 by Vermont couple Linda and Burr Vail. Linda Vail had spent the previous twenty years as a commercial interior designer in New England; the hacienda was her swan song, a property she designed in its entirety, room by room, from the floor plans through to the textiles, the individually-chosen furniture, and the names of the seventeen guest rooms. The result is the most personal small-property statement in Vieques and the highest-rated B&B on Puerto Rico for two decades running (currently #1 of twenty-nine B&Bs and inns in Vieques on TripAdvisor).
The seventeen rooms are spread across the main building (a low Caribbean colonial structure painted white with green-blue trim) and a separate cottage, Casita Linda, on the property's lower slope. Each room is individually designed in the Caribbean-tropical register, wooden French doors that open onto private or shared balconies overlooking the sea, hand-picked furniture in walnut and rattan, beds with two twins or a king, ceiling fans alongside air-conditioning, hand-tiled bathrooms. The room categories run Caribbean Rooms (most affordable, with shared balcony access), Caribbean Deluxe (private patio, larger), One-Room Suite (sleeps six with daybed; favoured for families), and Casita Linda (the standalone cottage). No room has a television, also a deliberate choice, and the property's WiFi is concentrated in the public spaces.
The Hacienda's signature element is the honor bar, a twenty-four-hour-access pantry off the lobby with bottled water, soft drinks, beer, mixers, snacks, and ice, which guests use as they want and tally on a clipboard at check-out. It is the single most-mentioned feature in the property's reviews and a near-perfect example of the small-property hospitality decision: trust the guest, save the labour of a 2am bar staff, recover the cost in the goodwill it generates. The daily American breakfast (eggs, bacon, fresh-baked muffins, fruit, juice, coffee) is included with every room and is served on the upper terrace until ten-thirty. There is no dinner kitchen, guests walk five minutes down the hill into Esperanza for the malecón restaurants.
The position is the second proposition. The hilltop site gives every room a 180-degree view of the southern coast of Vieques, from Cayo Real to the east through the Esperanza waterfront and the offshore cays to Punta Arenas in the west, and the south-facing orientation means full sunrise and sunset visibility from the upper deck. The Esperanza malecón restaurants (Bili, Duffy's, El Quenepo's outpost, the José Enrique-tradition kitchen at El Blok) are five minutes' walk down the hill; Sun Bay and the Mosquito Bay bioluminescent tour pier are five minutes by car. The Hacienda Tamarindo is the warmest, most consistently recommended, and most personally curated of the Vieques small hotels, for a B&B-style stay with views, breakfast, and the Linda-Vail-touch, there is no closer equivalent on the island.
The Hacienda Tamarindo is the strongest Vieques solo-retreat property under $250 per night, the founders are present and personally welcoming, the honor bar removes the social pressure of asking for things, the hilltop position keeps the rooms quiet, and the morning breakfast on the terrace puts the solo guest in light social contact without forcing the exchange. Book one of the Caribbean Deluxe rooms with a private patio for the maximum quiet.
A Vieques honeymoon at the Hacienda is the price-conscious romantic choice, the One-Room Suite is the best honeymoon unit at the property (two queens converted to a king on request, the largest of the rooms, private balcony with the full sweep of the Caribbean view), and the rate is roughly half the equivalent room at El Blok or Casa Solaris. The honeymooners' brief, view, breakfast in bed, walking distance to dinner, no children's programming, is exactly what the Hacienda provides.
For wellness travellers, the Hacienda offers the older, slower, low-key version of the brief, daily breakfast, vegetable-heavy menu options on request, the honor bar to manage your own pace, the swimming pool on the lower deck, and the hilltop walking trail to Sun Bay. The property doesn't market itself as a wellness retreat but functions reliably as one, and pairs particularly well with three nights at Hix Island House for the off-grid, no-air-conditioning, full-architectural counterweight.
