Daydream Island Resort

The 41-acre family-anchored island resort with the Whitsundays' only on-property open-air coral lagoon, 277 rooms refurbished in 2019, three pools, the Lover's Cove ferry to Airlie Beach, and the marine-biology programme that lets twelve-year-olds feed stingrays in the lobby.

Family Holiday Anniversary Wellness Retreat Beach/Island

The Whitsundays family island, redone, Daydream reopened in 2019 after a comprehensive A$140 million rebuild, with the open-air Living Reef coral lagoon at the centre of the property and 277 rooms wrapping the 41-acre island. The most accessible Great Barrier Reef resort and the one a family with children under twelve can actually use without compromise.

The Hotel

Daydream Island sits in the middle of the Whitsunday Passage, the smallest of the Whitsunday Group's continental islands at 41 acres. The original resort was developed by Crown Casinos founder Lloyd Williams in 1990 as a casino-and-resort complex and rebranded several times over the next two decades, including a period as the Mercure Daydream Island and the Travelodge Daydream. The current ownership, China Capital Investment Group, acquired the island in 2017 and closed the property for a comprehensive A$140 million reconstruction following damage from Cyclone Debbie.

The reopening on 27 April 2019 introduced the Whitsundays' first fully redesigned 'integrated reef ecosystem' resort. The Living Reef, a 1.5-million-litre, free-form open-air saltwater lagoon running through the centre of the resort, is stocked with 100-plus species of fish, sharks, rays and coral, all of it visible from the lobby, the bar, and the main pool deck. The Living Reef is the resort's central proposition and the feature no other Whitsunday property can match.

The 277 keys are arranged across three accommodation wings, the Trade Winds Tower at the north end, the Reef View building wrapping the lagoon, and the Garden View block at the south end of the island. Resort Rooms run 36 square metres; Ocean View Rooms and Family Rooms sleep four; the headline Reef Suite category opens directly onto the Living Reef lagoon with a private terrace below the coral edge. All 277 rooms were rebuilt to one specification in 2019: king or twin queens, walk-in rainshower, climate control, dedicated 65-inch screens, in-room minibar. The Mermaid Tavern, Inkstone Kitchen, Graze Restaurant, Lagoons (lobby bar) and the Inkstone Garden Pool Bar handle the dining and beverage operation across the 24-hour resort.

The resort's marine-biology programme is the second proposition. The on-island marine team runs four daily public sessions, feeding the lemon sharks, hand-feeding the stingrays, the coral talk, the underwater observatory tour, and a junior-biologist programme for guests aged eight to twelve that runs for the duration of a stay. The Rejuvenation Spa, the dive centre, daily reef trips to Bait Reef, the Whitsundays' only on-island mini-golf course, and the ferry service to Airlie Beach (twenty minutes) round out the offer. Daydream is not the most refined Whitsundays resort, but it is the most useful: a family with children under twelve can stay seven nights without paying for one additional activity or one external transfer.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

Daydream is the Whitsundays family island by a wide margin. The Living Reef lagoon, the four daily marine-biology sessions, the kids' club for ages 3, 12, the family-configured rooms sleeping four with a bunk alcove, the three pools, the mini-golf, the lemon-shark feeding, and the snorkel platform off Lover's Cove are all included in the room rate. Two-bedroom Family Suites are the multi-generational booking; the inter-connecting Garden View rooms are the working-budget version.

Anniversary

For a quieter Whitsundays anniversary the Reef Suites, the upper-category rooms with private terraces over the Living Reef, are the booking. The Rejuvenation Spa runs couples treatments in the over-water pavilions; the Graze Restaurant handles fine-dining nights; the resort can arrange private boat charters to Whitehaven Beach for the milestone afternoon. Daydream is the Whitsundays anniversary that costs a third of qualia and a half of Hayman.

Wellness Retreat

The Whitsundays wellness option. The Rejuvenation Spa runs a substantial wellness menu (twelve treatment rooms, including over-water pavilions), daily yoga on the resort's southern lawn, and a quiet-zone adults-only pool at the south end. The Living Reef itself is a wellness amenity: the morning coral-feeding sessions and the resident-marine-biologist briefings have the calming-quasi-meditative quality of a small aquarium at dawn.
