Hotel Tentrem opened on 8 December 2013, the first hotel property of the Sido Muncul group, an Indonesian conglomerate best known for the country's largest herbal-medicine and traditional-jamu business. The hotel was conceived as the group's flagship investment in Yogyakarta hospitality and built to serve the city's then-growing demand for a contemporary international-standard five-star with proper ballroom infrastructure, the gap between the heritage Phoenix and the standard city-grade hotels that the city's wedding-and-corporate market had been working around for a decade.
The location is the property's first strong asset. Jalan Mangkubumi is the principal northern artery into central Yogyakarta, five minutes by car from Tugu Station and the Yogyakarta Royal Palace (Kraton), ten minutes from Malioboro Street, and the natural connecting point between the city centre and the route north to Borobudur.
