"You cannot drive here, you cannot walk here in any practical sense, and the moment the Gornergrat train pulls away after dropping you at the station, the silence is the point. The Matterhorn is across the valley at eye level and never moves out of frame."

The Hotel

The original Grand Hotel Riffelalp opened on 10 July 1884, two years before the Gornergrat railway reached the plateau, and within a decade became one of the Alps' most celebrated summer addresses, drawing Edward VII, Mark Twain, and a long catalogue of European aristocracy onto its 2,222-metre terrace. The hotel had its own electric tram running across the property from the railway stop, the highest tram line in Europe in its day, and the line is still in operation on the same gauge. A 1961 fire destroyed the main wooden hotel and the site sat dormant for almost four decades. The current Riffelalp Resort was rebuilt across the 1998-to-2000 seasons on the original footprint, with an enlarged spa wing added in 2003 and a comprehensive renovation completed in 2016 and 2017.

The 72 keys (65 rooms, 5 suites, 2 apartments) are arranged across the main building and the suite annex. Nearly every room has a private balcony with a direct Matterhorn line of sight; the property's marketing claim that 90 per cent of rooms hold the view is one of the rare such claims that survives audit. The room product is the cleanest reading of contemporary alpine in the Valais five-star set: pale oak, charcoal stone, generous wool textiles, and bathrooms with separate rain showers and deep tubs in the higher categories. The two named family apartments hold two bedrooms and a sitting room each; the Riffelalp Suite is the property's headline unit with a wrap terrace and a private cedar hot tub.

The Ristorante Al Bosco is the hotel's headline restaurant, an Italian room that opened in 2007 and reads as the most consistent Italian dining at altitude in the Alps. The Restaurant Alexandre runs the main hotel kitchen for breakfast and dinner with a daily-changing modern Swiss menu. The Bar Le Petit Riffel handles aperitif hour with the village's quietest reservation; the smoker's lounge holds a cigar inventory deeper than any property in the canton. A formal afternoon tea runs through the season in the main lounge. Half-board is available and well-judged given that there is no walk-in alternative once the last Gornergrat train of the night has departed.

The spa is the property's other defining proposition. The outdoor heated pool at 2,222 metres is Europe's highest, with steam rising on cold mornings and the Matterhorn directly framed across the valley. The indoor wellness floor adds a 25-metre lap pool, a separate children's pool, three sauna environments, a steam room, a hammam, a Kneipp foot pool, and a small but properly equipped fitness room. Spa treatments lean toward elemental alpine vocabularies, edelweiss, larch, arnica. The resort is a Leading Hotels of the World member and consistently ranks among the world's top high-altitude resorts in Conde Nast and Travel + Leisure surveys.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

A Riffelalp honeymoon is the answer for couples who want isolation, altitude, and a permanent Matterhorn line of sight from the bed. The Riffelalp Suite with the private cedar hot tub on its terrace is the headline booking; the Junior Suites in the main building are the cleaner value for couples who want the view without the suite premium. The Gornergrat-only access guarantees that no day-trippers will be in the corridor; the private tram across the property is the unrepeatable arrival sequence.

Wellness Retreat

For a high-altitude wellness week the Riffelalp has the strongest physical product in Zermatt. The outdoor pool at 2,222 metres, the full sauna sequence, the elevation itself (which materially improves sleep and cardiovascular response after the first 48 hours), and the option of structured hiking out the door above the treeline in summer or ski touring in winter combine into the most physiologically interesting wellness stay in the Swiss Alps.

Solo Retreat

The property is the cleanest solo retreat in Zermatt for travellers who want quiet, no village distractions, and a daily structure of hike, swim, read, sleep. The library and the lounge are well-judged single-occupant spaces; half-board makes the no-decision evening routine simple; the spa runs solo treatments without ceremony. Three or four nights is the right length; longer and the elevation begins to argue.
