The Loren at Pink Beach

Forty-five rooms above Pink Beach on Bermuda's south shore, the first new luxury hotel built on the island in nearly half a century, all-glass-and-limestone restraint by Sweden's Stelio Stefanou, every balcony Atlantic-facing.

"Bermuda's only design-forward hotel, and the only address on the island that reads as if it could have opened in Capri or Mykonos last week. If pastel colonial isn't the brief, this is the answer."

The Hotel

The Loren at Pink Beach opened in March 2017 on the site of the long-shuttered Pink Beach Club, which had operated as a casual cottage colony from 1947 until 2010. The new hotel was developed by Greek-American owner Stelio Stefanou, who named it for his daughter Loren and built it to a brief that no Bermuda hotel had attempted: contemporary international design rather than colonial-Bermudian pastel. The architecture, clean limestone, sliding glass walls, infinity-edged terraces, was a deliberate rebuke to the white-roofed, shuttered tradition that defines almost every other property on the island. It worked: within two years The Loren had collected the kind of design-press attention Bermuda hadn't seen in two generations.

There are 45 rooms and suites, every one of them oriented to the Atlantic. Standard rooms run 65 square metres, generous by any island standard, and the suite categories scale up from there. The Beach House Residence, the headline unit, sits on its own 5.5-acre parcel adjacent to the main hotel: six bedrooms, 10,700 square feet, private beach, tennis court, plunge pool, chef's kitchen, media room, separate staff quarters. It is the largest single-key residence-for-rent on Bermuda and is regularly taken in full by family offices, music acts in transit, and the occasional Hollywood production. Standard suite categories, Pink Beach, Ocean, Penthouse, are large, light, and unfussy, with Italian linens, polished plaster walls, and Atlantic-facing balconies.

The hotel runs two restaurants. Marée is the main dining room, a sea-and-vegetable Mediterranean menu by chef Anthony Anselmo on a glass-walled terrace 20 metres above the breaking surf. Pink Beach Club is the all-day casual sister at beach level, with the most carefully sourced raw bar on the island. The infinity pool above the cliff is the architectural set piece, a cantilevered black-bottomed plate that reads as if it pours directly into the Atlantic. The spa is small (four treatment rooms) but the partnerships with Aromatherapy Associates and Subtle Energies are credible. There's no golf course and no kids' programme: by design, the hotel is for couples and quiet small groups.

Service is the area where the hotel is still youngest. Pre-arrival logistics are tight, on-property staff are warm and consistent, but the depth of long-tenured local hires that defines Rosewood and Cambridge isn't quite there yet, a function of being the new hotel rather than a structural problem. For a guest who values the architecture and the south-shore-cliff position over institutional history, The Loren is the most distinctive room on Bermuda. For a couple who want something that doesn't look like every other hotel on the island, it is the only answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For a Bermuda honeymoon that doesn't want pastel-colonial architecture and doesn't want a 240-acre estate, The Loren is the answer. Penthouse suites have wraparound terraces above the Atlantic; the cantilevered infinity pool is the most photographed swim on the island; Marée at sunset is the most romantic dinner address on Bermuda. The lack of children's programming is a positive feature, the hotel is reliably quiet at all hours.

Anniversary

For a milestone anniversary, the Penthouse Suites and the cliff-edge Marée terrace are the structure of an evening that genuinely competes with anywhere in the Mediterranean. The concierge will book a private dinner on the lower beach platform, a single table, two chairs, the surf 10 metres away, for the occasion. The Beach House Residence covers the major-milestone version, sleeping up to twelve.

Proposal

The cantilevered infinity pool, the cliff-edge dining terrace at Marée, and the lower beach platform are three of the strongest proposal sets on Bermuda, all of them unobtrusively bookable, none of them gimmicky. The hotel arranges these without ceremony; the staff understand exactly what to do and exactly what not to do.
