The Hotel

Montage Big Sky opened in December 2021 as the first five-star resort in the state of Montana, set behind the gated entry of the 3,500-acre Spanish Peaks Mountain Club at the base of Lone Mountain. The architecture, by Hart Howerton, reads as a contemporary refinement of the great early-twentieth-century park lodges: timber, stone, and weathered steel arranged in long horizontal lines that the Spanish Peaks landscape demands. The resort is the largest single new five-star opening in the American Mountain West in a decade, and its arrival reset the regional luxury benchmark.

The 139 guestrooms and suites are arranged across The Lodge, The Inn, and a cluster of Mountain Homes, with 39 additional residences available to rent. Standard Lodge Rooms run a generous 525 square feet, with the dual-aspect Deluxe Vista and Deluxe Peak One-Bedroom Suites adding fireplaces, terraces, and roughly 1,100 square feet. The Spanish Peaks Suite, at 4,000 square feet, sits at the top of the resort programme and is the presidential category, with a private living-room balcony facing the Spanish Peaks range and a second bedroom suitable for principal-and-detail bookings.

Seven dining outlets define the off-snow programme. Cortina, the wood-fired Italian chophouse anchored by a 1957 La Cornue, draws inspiration from the Dolomites and pivots toward Montana sourcing. The Grill is the casual après-ski room; The Beehive Basement Bar functions as the late-night setting. Spa Montage runs 11,000 square feet with twelve treatment rooms, two couples suites, indoor mineral plunge pools, and an outdoor mountain-view soaking pool. The resort holds private access to three blue-ribbon fly-fishing rivers, an 18-hole Tom Weiskopf golf course, and an exclusive ski-club lift on the Spanish Peaks side of Big Sky Resort.

Yellowstone National Park's western gateway sits forty-five minutes south of the resort gate, and the Montage maintains a Yellowstone naturalist programme with private tours arranged around bison rut, fall elk migration, and the Lamar Valley wolf-pack reintroduction territory. The combined offer is the only five-star resort in North America that operates ski-in/ski-out to a top-three U.S. ski mountain, the only one inside a private 3,500-acre wilderness preserve, and the only one positioned for a same-day Yellowstone day-trip. Forbes named the property a Five-Star resort within twenty-four months of opening.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Western-mountain honeymoons, the Deluxe Peak One-Bedroom Suite gives a private terrace facing the Spanish Peaks range, a fireplace, two bathrooms, and the kind of square footage that allows a couple to occupy a room rather than retreat from one. The couples treatment room at Spa Montage runs a four-handed sequence with the option of a private outdoor soaking tub afterwards. The honeymoon package adds a horseback-riding day, a private fly-fishing guide, and a Yellowstone naturalist drive.

Family Holiday

The Compass Sports children's programme covers ages three to twelve with an outdoor focus: fly-tying lessons, bison-tracking walks, naturalist programmes, sleigh-rides, and a winter ice-skating pavilion. The Mountain Home residences (three to five bedrooms, with private chefs available) are designed for multi-generation family bookings. Ski-in/ski-out to the Spanish Peaks side of Big Sky Resort puts the children's ski school three minutes from the lobby.

Wellness Retreat

Spa Montage at 11,000 square feet is the largest dedicated hotel spa in the northern Rockies, with twelve treatment rooms, two couples suites, indoor mineral pools, an outdoor heated pool, and Finnish dry sauna. The signature Spanish Peaks Stone treatment uses river stones quarried locally; the high-altitude recovery programme addresses arrivals from sea level. Yoga and Pilates run daily; the resort partners with a Bozeman-based functional-medicine practice for longer wellness retreats.
