"The reason to choose Awasi over Belmond is the guide, every villa books with a private guide and a private 4×4 for the whole stay, and the brief becomes the rainforest beyond the falls. The falls remain the headline; everything Awasi gives you afterwards is the second act."

The Hotel

Awasi Iguazú is the third property in Awasi's small Argentine-Chilean lodge group, after Awasi Atacama (2007) and Awasi Patagonia (2013), and was opened in May 2018 on a 35-hectare private parcel of jungle bordering the protected indigenous community of Selva Yriapú, in the Misiones province of northeastern Argentina. The site sits roughly half an hour from Iguazú International Airport and 45 minutes from the entrance to Iguazú National Park on the Argentine side; the falls are part of the brief but not the whole brief, Awasi positions the property as a deep-rainforest immersion in which the cataracts are one excursion among many. The architecture, by Chilean studio Bórquez Wolff, was designed to vanish into the canopy: 14 stilted villas raised four metres off the forest floor, connected by elevated wooden walkways to a central lodge of timber, glass and reed.

The 14 villas are each 100 square metres, a single-room open-plan layout with a king bed, a wood-panelled living area, a partially-outdoor ensuite bathroom with bath and shower, and a private wraparound terrace with a plunge pool that projects into the canopy. Materials are Guarani and Misiones-regional: wood-panelled walls, Guarani-textile throws, ceramic by indigenous Misiones potters, modern Argentine furniture by Roberto Lojo and Cristián Mohaded. There is no in-room television, no in-room phone, deliberately limited Wi-Fi (the bandwidth is for the central lodge), and a private deck that overlooks unbroken jungle. The single 150 square metre two-bedroom Awasi Suite, with two bedrooms and a larger terrace, is the headline family/honeymoon-extended unit.

The Awasi operating model is the proposition. Each villa is assigned a private guide and a private 4×4 vehicle for the duration of the stay. The guide builds the daily excursion programme with the guest the night before, the standard menu is Iguaçu National Park on the Argentine side, the Brazilian side, the Macuco Safari Zodiac, the Devil's Throat boat ride, the Yacutinga private reserve, San Ignacio Mini Jesuit ruins, a Guarani community visit at the Yryapú reserve, dawn birdwatching, and bespoke combinations. There are no scheduled group excursions, no group buses, no fixed activity programmes, the entire stay is bespoke. The central lodge holds the restaurant (single open kitchen running modern Argentine), a 25-metre pool overlooking the jungle, a small library, and the spa with two treatment rooms drawing on Misiones medicinal-plant traditions.

Awasi is the most expensive Iguazú address per night by some distance, all-inclusive rates start above USD 2,250, but the inclusion list earns the rate: all meals, the full wine list, the private guide and vehicle, all excursions, all park entry fees, and the minibar. Three nights is the typical stay; many guests extend to five. For travellers who came to Iguazú to see the Misiones rainforest rather than to tick a falls photograph, the Awasi is the only honest answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Iguazú honeymoons that prioritise privacy over the photographable, Awasi is the booking. The 100-square-metre villa with its private plunge pool and canopy terrace; the dedicated guide who builds the falls visit at first light when the park is empty; the in-villa dinner option set on the private deck. Combine with three nights in Buenos Aires or four in Patagonia for the Argentine fortnight.

Wellness Retreat

The Awasi wellness brief is not yoga and juices, it is silent forest, dawn birdwatching with a private guide, a plunge pool in the canopy, and treatments that draw on Guarani medicinal plant traditions. The deliberate Wi-Fi limitations and the absence of in-villa screens make this the most rigorous digital-detox property in South America.

Solo Retreat

Solo travellers benefit twice from the Awasi model: the private guide gives company on the daily excursion, while the villa gives complete privacy on return. The communal long-table dinner option in the central lodge offers the alternative, meet the other twelve villa guests over an Argentine Malbec, but solo diners can equally take their dinner on the villa terrace alone.
