The Andaman opened in 1998 as the second hotel on Datai Bay (the Datai opened in 1993), and for the first decade was operated as a YTL Group property before joining Starwood's Luxury Collection in the late 2000s, now operated by Marriott since the 2016 Starwood acquisition. The architecture is more conventionally tropical than the Datai's spare Kerry Hill geometry: high-pitched timber roofs, broad verandas, and an axial east, west arrangement that places almost every room on a sea or rainforest sightline. The 2018 refurbishment refreshed every guest room and added the Tides restaurant pavilion overlooking the reef at low tide.
The 178 keys are arranged across the main building (Deluxe Rainforest, Deluxe Sea View), the Premier wing (Premier Sea View, Premier Pool), and the four Beachfront Pool Villas at the eastern end. The Beachfront Pool Villa is the suite that justifies the trip, a private gated path to the beach, plunge pool, and outdoor shower under the rainforest canopy. Entry-level Deluxe Rainforest rooms at 50 square metres are larger than most regional five-star norms and the soft-furnishings refresh is recent enough to feel current.
The 8,000-year-old fringing reef immediately offshore is the resort's signature feature. The in-house Coral Nursery, the only of its kind on a Malaysian resort, propagates the reef in partnership with Universiti Malaya marine biology, and resident guides run free guided snorkel walks at low tide. Tides restaurant is the seafood-leaning Western dining room; Tepian Laut handles Malay-Thai; Jala does the casual all-day. The V Spa is one of the larger spa footprints on the island, with two outdoor treatment rooms set in private rainforest clearings.
For families, the Andaman is comfortably the strongest Datai Bay address. The Young Explorers programme runs a daily structured rotation between the reef, the rainforest, batik workshops, and the kids' pool; the property's larger footprint and softer architectural language make it the easier proposition with children than the more architecturally rigorous Datai next door. Honeymooners willing to forego the Aman-adjacent purism of the Datai will find the Andaman's Beachfront Pool Villa a strong proposition at roughly 60 per cent of the Datai's villa rate.
The Andaman is the Datai Bay address built for families. The Young Explorers programme is structured rather than custodial, children come back with actual knowledge of reef biology and Langkawi geology. Interconnecting Premier rooms accommodate two-children families; the Beachfront Pool Villa works for three-generation gatherings. The shallow reef means even confident eight-year-olds can snorkel from the beach.
For honeymooners who'd rather not spend Datai-tier money, the Andaman's Premier Pool rooms and Beachfront Pool Villas are the value-honeymoon answer on the bay. Private candlelit dinner on the beach can be arranged at Tides; the V Spa's couples treatment rooms are set in rainforest clearings.
The V Spa runs a credible Malay-influenced wellness programme, herbal compresses, batu kawi stone massages, and a half-decent yoga schedule on the Tides pavilion. Less austere than the Datai's Ayurveda; more reachable as a soft-wellness week than as a full reset.
