"The rainforest is older than the rooms by ten million years, and the resort has the wisdom never to argue with that fact."

The Hotel

The Datai opened in 1993 as the first serious-money hotel on Langkawi and remains, more than three decades later, the island's central reference point for what tropical luxury can be when it refuses to fight the landscape. The original architecture was the work of the Australian-born Kerry Hill, pavilions in dark hardwood and limestone arranged in a falling sequence from the lobby down through the jungle canopy to the beach, less a resort than a long architectural conversation with a ten-million-year-old rainforest. Hill's design language, covered walkways, oversized eaves, exterior built more than interior, set the template that Aman, Soneva, and every serious tropical operator after it would borrow from.

The 121 keys are arranged as 54 rooms in the canopy block, 12 suites, 40 rainforest villas, and 14 beach villas, the latter being the headline accommodation, freestanding teak structures with private plunge pools opening onto two-mile-long Datai Bay. The resort closed in 2017 for a full restoration by Didier Lefort (Lefort took over after Hill's death in 2018), reopening in late 2018 with every surface refreshed but the original architectural intent preserved with unusual fidelity. The Beach Villas and the One-Bedroom Beach Villa Pool are the suites that justify the trip; the Canopy Deluxe rooms are the entry point at MYR 2,700 and remain among the better mid-tier rooms in Southeast Asia.

The Gulai House, reached by a short jungle walk from the main lobby, is one of the great regional kitchens of Malaysia, serving Malay-Indian heritage cooking in a teak longhouse on stilts. The Pavilion handles modern Thai under the supervision of a Bangkok-trained kitchen team; The Beach Club is the casual lunch venue on the sand; The Dining Room is the all-day Western option. Service across all four is uniformly Datai, quiet, observant, and unfailingly aware of the line between attentive and intrusive.

The Datai Estate, the 760 acres of rainforest the resort sits inside, is the second proposition. A resident naturalist runs guided morning walks; the Datai Nature Pledge funds long-term hornbill research, mangrove restoration, and a permaculture farm that supplies the kitchens. The spa, perched in a clearing above the bay, runs an Ayurveda-leaning program with two resident Indian doctors. Two championship golf holes from The Els Club, designed by Ernie Els, sit on the Datai Estate. Every honest list of the world's great rainforest resorts puts the Datai in the top five and most put it at the top.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Southeast Asian honeymoons that don't want a Maldives photograph, the Datai is the answer. Book a Beach Villa with private pool; spend mornings on the bay before the sun is up, afternoons in the spa, evenings at the Gulai House. The two miles of Datai Bay are arguably the quietest serious beach in tropical Asia, and the resort's relationship with the rainforest gives the property a sense of depth no overwater pavilion can match.

Wellness Retreat

The Datai Spa runs a credibly serious Ayurveda program with two in-residence Indian doctors and a six- or twelve-day Panchakarma-leaning protocol. Yoga twice daily on the Rainforest Deck. Forest bathing with the resident naturalist; mangrove kayaking before breakfast. The signature wellness package is one of the few in Asia genuinely worth the price.

Anniversary

For an Asian anniversary that wants both the beach and the jungle, the Datai handles the brief with unusual elegance. The Beach Villas for milestone years; the Two-Bedroom Beach Pool Villa for multi-generational gatherings. The Gulai House does private candlelit dinners on the longhouse terrace; the Datai Estate runs guided sunset walks that finish at the beach with champagne already laid out.
