Four 17th-century townhouses on the Ljubljanica's Krojaška reach, joined behind a single interior by Sadar+Vuga, with the rooftop plunge pool that established Ljubljana's contemporary boutique baseline.
"The rooftop plunge looks straight at Triple Bridge. Every other Ljubljana boutique has been chasing this view since 2010."
The Vander Urbani Resort opened in 2010 inside four adjoining 17th-century townhouses on Krojaška ulica, the cobblestoned lane that runs along the right bank of the Ljubljanica between the Cobblers' Bridge (Čevljarski most) and Triple Bridge. The conversion was led by the Ljubljana practice Sadar+Vuga (the same studio behind the InterContinental glass tower), retaining every façade and most of the original structural envelope while joining the four narrow houses behind a single contemporary interior. The property has been a Design Hotels member from opening.
The 20 rooms are arranged across the four houses and four floors, with the largest categories (the Vander Suite, the Loft Suites) cut through the upper floors with double-height ceilings and original timber beams left exposed. Standard categories run 18, 25 square metres with custom-made bed frames, polished concrete floors, oversized mirrors, and small bathrooms with rain showers, the design language is restrained Slovenian contemporary rather than international hotel-modern. The Vander Suite, the largest accommodation, occupies the corner of the top floor with a private terrace overlooking the Ljubljanica.
The rooftop is the property's defining feature, a 12-metre glass-walled infinity-edge plunge pool runs across the top of the four houses, with a small adjacent yoga studio, a sun deck, and a glass-walled bar that opens in summer. The view runs along the Ljubljanica towards Triple Bridge, the Franciscan Church, and the castle hill above. The ground-floor Vander Restaurant is run by a rotating series of Slovenian guest chefs (the original was Janez Bratovkž of JB Restavracija); the breakfast room opens onto the cobblestone of Krojaška.
The Vander's position is the most directly atmospheric of any Ljubljana boutique, Krojaška is closed to traffic, Cobblers' Bridge is two doors down, Prešeren Square and Triple Bridge are a 90-second walk, and the entire Old Town restaurant cluster is within four minutes. For travellers prioritising the cobbled Old Town walking experience and the rooftop plunge over the contemporary glass-tower view, the Vander is the established Ljubljana reference.
For a Ljubljana honeymoon at design-hotel scale, the Vander's Vander Suite or one of the upper-floor Loft Suites is the central booking, the plunge pool at sunset, the cobblestone walking position on Krojaška, the breakfast room opening onto the lane, and the kind of room that photographs as well as it lives in. The hotel arranges private boat trips on the Ljubljanica from the pier directly outside, post-hours castle access, and private dining in the upstairs Vander Restaurant.
Solo travellers in Ljubljana frequently choose the Vander as the first boutique because the scale (20 rooms), the design language, and the rooftop plunge make it feel less like a hotel and more like a private apartment in the Old Town. The yoga studio next to the rooftop pool, the walking position to every museum and gallery in the centre, and the small Vander Restaurant for working dinners all read as solo-friendly rather than business-conventional.
A Ljubljana anniversary at the Vander works at the lower-cost end of the milestone-stay spectrum, the rooftop plunge at dusk and a glass of Movia rebula make the room itself the memorable thing without needing the more formal historic-palace experience at the Antiq Palace. Cobblers' Bridge is one minute on foot, Triple Bridge two; the cluster of Old Town restaurants is the city at its most walkable.
