"What you trade for not staying at the gate is the view: every room at the Marriott faces the valley the Treasury sits inside, and the morning balcony coffee is the moment most guests remember of their Petra trip after they have flown home."

The Hotel

The Petra Marriott sits on the upper edge of Wadi Musa, on Queen Rania Al Abdallah Street, the ridgeline road that climbs out of the town centre and ends at the Petra Visitor Centre five minutes' drive below. The property opened in 1996 as the second international five-star hotel in Wadi Musa (after the Mövenpick), passed into Marriott management in the mid-2000s, and completed a comprehensive renovation in 2022 that took every room in the property back to studs, replaced every furnishing, every bathroom, and the entire restaurant and lobby fit-out. The result is the newest five-star refurbishment in the Petra cluster and one of the most-recommended Marriott Bonvoy properties in the Middle East.

The hotel holds 100 rooms across the post-2022 floor plan: Deluxe Rooms (32 m²) with valley-view balconies, Premium Rooms (36 m²) higher up with double balcony aspects, and the Petra Suite (62 m², a corner unit with a panoramic-view living room and a separate bedroom). Every room, without exception, looks south across the valley toward the hills that hide the Petra archaeological park. The renovation also reworked the bedding programme to the Marriott Luxury Collection specification, added universal USB-C charging and full-fibre WiFi, and rebuilt the bathrooms to a walk-in rain-shower-plus-soaking-tub standard in every category from Deluxe upward.

Dining is the Bedouin-influenced Levant restaurant The Olive Branch, the post-renovation flagship, a hot-stone-grill operation with an extensive Jordanian and Lebanese mezze menu, run with a small-plates ordering format rather than a buffet. The Lobby Lounge handles all-day coffee and afternoon tea. The Terrace Bar, the rebuilt outdoor venue on the property's south-facing escarpment, is the most-photographed sunset terrace in Wadi Musa, with seating for sixty looking directly across the valley. An outdoor pool sits in the property's small garden; a fitness centre and a contemporary spa are downstairs. The traditional pre-Petra-walk breakfast at the Marriott runs from 4:30 AM to support guests aiming for the Treasury at first light.

Service is the property's quietest strength, Jordanian-staffed, English-fluent, and unusually long-tenured, with several of the front-of-house team having worked at the property since opening in 1996. The Marriott runs a complimentary shuttle to the Petra Visitor Centre every thirty minutes from 6:00 AM through 9:00 PM, which substitutes for the Mövenpick's on-foot position and is the single reason that for most travellers the Marriott represents the better value at the price point. The position above the town is also the quietest in Wadi Musa, there is no through-traffic on Queen Rania Street, and the property is quiet from sunset.

Best Occasion Fit

Family Holiday

For Petra family stays the Marriott is the most balanced answer in Wadi Musa. The post-2022 rooms and bathrooms are the newest five-star fit-out at the destination; connecting Deluxe Valley View rooms handle a four-person family on a single floor; the shuttle to the gate runs every half hour from 6:00 AM; the outdoor pool gives children somewhere to recover after the eight-kilometre Treasury walk. The Olive Branch's small-plate format works better than a buffet for picky eaters.

Anniversary

For anniversaries the Petra Suite paired with the Terrace Bar at sunset is the Marriott's central proposition. The corner Suite with its private balcony catches the southwest light over the valley for the better part of an hour each evening; the Olive Branch handles a private chef's-menu booking for two with a day's notice; the spa runs a couples' hammam ritual in a private suite. The hotel will arrange a Petra-by-Night ticket and a guide pickup at the gate as a turn-down surprise.

Business

For corporate retreats and small board offsites at Petra, the Marriott is the most recent fit-out and offers two boardrooms with valley views, a Petra Ballroom for up to 180, and a meeting-and-banquet team that handles the full inventory of Jordan corporate-retreat set-pieces: a Bedouin welcome dinner on the Terrace, a Petra archaeological-park private tour, and a Wadi Rum desert excursion as a day trip. The Marriott Bonvoy points programme is the standard practical advantage for repeat business guests.
