The Hotel

Patios de Cafayate sits inside the historic colonial-era estancia at the heart of Bodega El Esteco, one of the senior wineries of the Calchaquí Valley and the principal high-altitude Torrontés and Malbec producer of northern Argentina. The property was developed as a hotel from the nineteenth-century main house and outbuildings of the estancia, opened under the Starwood Luxury Collection in 2003, and has remained the only Marriott Luxury Collection address in the Argentine north since transition. The Cafayate township is a ninety-minute drive south of Salta city through the Quebrada de las Conchas, itself one of the great drives of South America.

The 32 rooms are distributed across the historic main house and a series of converted estancia outbuildings arranged around the original colonial patios that give the hotel its name. Courtyard Rooms in the main house run 40 square metres with French windows opening onto the planted patios; Garden Suites occupy the eastern wing with private terraces looking onto the vineyards; the Vineyard Casitas, the headline category, are freestanding stone-and-adobe cottages set among the vines with their own small pools and direct views to the Calchaquí range. The El Esteco Suite, the property's top unit, occupies the historic master quarters of the estancia.

The food-and-beverage operation is anchored by the bodega itself. La Rosa is the formal restaurant in the converted estancia dining room, a Calchaquí-Andean menu paired with the El Esteco wines (Don David, Old Vines, Altimus and the headline single-vineyard expressions). The hotel runs daily winery tours, vineyard rides on horseback through the property's planted blocks, and private cellar tastings in the bodega's underground caves. The Spa de Vinoterapia, the wine-spa, with grape-extract treatments and an indoor heated pool, is the wellness anchor of the property.

The verdict is that Patios de Cafayate is the only true luxury wine-hotel in northern Argentina and the central booking for any Calchaquí-Valley itinerary worth the airfare from Buenos Aires. The position, vines on three sides, the colonial estancia at the centre, the high-altitude Calchaquí sky overhead, the El Esteco bodega running through the property, is unrepeatable. The competing properties in Cafayate are essentially country hotels; this is a working historic winery that happens to operate the senior Marriott Luxury Collection in the north of the country.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

For Calchaquí-Valley anniversaries the Vineyard Casita with the private pool is the central booking, with the bodega tour, the cellar tasting, and a private dinner in La Rosa as the natural three-night programme. The property handles surprise arrangements (in-room torrontés on arrival, vineyard horseback at sunset, a private cellar service) with senior Luxury Collection composure that the regional alternatives cannot match.

Honeymoon

For honeymoons that combine wine with a meaningful sense of place, this is the answer in Argentina north of Mendoza. The Vineyard Casitas with private pools deliver the seclusion brief; the bodega-and-cellar programming gives the days a structured rhythm; the ninety-minute drive from Salta city through the Quebrada de las Conchas adds an opening day-trip that almost no other South American honeymoon address can offer.

Wellness Retreat

The Spa de Vinoterapia, grape-extract treatments, an indoor heated pool, full massage menu, is the wellness anchor, and unusual in northern Argentina. The altitude (1,700 metres at Cafayate) delivers a noticeable training-effect; the dry Calchaquí climate is exceptional for outdoor yoga and meditation practice; the property runs guided horseback through the vineyards as the active complement.
