The Hotel

The Waves is a small Cannon Beach oceanfront property that, unusually for the village, operates as a single hotel across several adjacent buildings rather than as one block: the West 2nd Street main address is the front-desk hub, and the surrounding parcel includes the original waterfront studios on the sea wall, the White Heron Lodge across the street, the Flagship Studio next door, and several freestanding cottages and apartments within easy walking range. The property has been independently owned and family-operated for several decades and is one of the few village hotels where the same family answers the phone and turns the rooms.

The 35 units are individually named rather than categorised: spacious family-sized apartments with two or three bedrooms, oceanfront studios on the sea wall, one-and-two-bedroom suites in the White Heron Lodge across the street, garden-view cottages set back a row from the sand, and the Flagship Studio with the strongest direct ocean view of the cluster. Most units include kitchenettes or full kitchens, gas fireplaces, and either ocean-front, ocean-view, northwest-ocean-view, or garden-view aspects. The exact unit you book is the unit you stay in: there is no category-level inventory.

There is no on-site restaurant. The Waves' position on West 2nd Street is one of the most usefully central in Cannon Beach: the Wayfarer is a four-minute walk south, Sweet Basil's Cafe is around the corner, Pelican Brewing is on Hemlock Street two minutes inland, and the row of village restaurants and the central Hemlock Street galleries are all within five minutes' walking range. The unit kitchens handle the in-house breakfast or the in-room dinner when guests prefer.

The Waves runs as a true family-operated small lodging. The front desk is staffed daytime; an on-call number handles the evening; check-in is straightforward and the staff knows which unit suits which brief because the same five people book the same families year over year. There is no restaurant, no pool, and no programmed amenity offering; the property is two minutes' walk to Hemlock Street and four minutes to Haystack Rock at low tide, and the rest of the day handles itself. Pets are accommodated in some units; bicycles are available; a basic continental breakfast tray is on the front desk on most mornings.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

The Waves is the strongest village-walk anniversary booking in Cannon Beach: an oceanfront sea-wall studio or a White Heron Lodge one-bedroom across the street, a four-minute walk to the Wayfarer dinner reservation, the gas fireplace on for the evening, the Haystack Rock window in the morning. Booking the same unit two years running is part of the appeal.

Solo Retreat

A Waves solo-retreat works because the property is true to scale: one front desk, one family, no resort overhead, no kids' programme, no breakfast room queue. An oceanfront studio on the sea wall is the smallest booking; the Flagship Studio is the upgrade; the four-minute walk to the village handles dinner.

Family Holiday

The two and three-bedroom apartments are the Waves family booking and they are the village's most usefully sized family unit for a longer stay: a full kitchen, multiple bedrooms, an ocean-view living room, a four-minute walk to the beach and another four to Hemlock Street. The pet-friendly options handle the family-with-dog brief that most Cannon Beach hotels cannot.
