The Hotel

Banyan Tree Samui opened in October 2010 on a 39-acre property occupying a private cove on the southeastern coast of Koh Samui, the Lamai-adjacent stretch that the operator's masterplanners identified as the only undeveloped luxury-resort-scale beachfront on the island's busier southern half. The site is a single, steep, terraced hillside that drops from a road-level lobby through three layers of villa platforms to its own private bay; the entire resort is effectively invisible from the public road. The Singapore-based design practice Architrave Design & Planning and the Bangkok atelier of the architect Lek Bunnag did the masterplan; the Banyan Tree founder Ho Kwon Ping took a hands-on role in the property's design brief. A comprehensive 2022 refurbishment lifted every villa and tightened the spa pavilion programme.

The 88 villas are arranged on the hillside in a strict altitude-graded hierarchy. Pool Villa Sanctuary (the entry category, set further back into the hillside at the upper terraces) and Sanctuary Pool Villa are the standard one-bedroom units; Ocean View Pool Villa (the mid-altitude line, the strongest single value category) has the better bay-facing aspect; Bayfront Pool Villa (the lower-terrace seafront line) is the headline single-villa category, directly above the cove, with the largest pool footprint and the most photographed sunset deck. The Spa Pool Villa includes its own indoor treatment room with twin spa beds; the Royal Banyan Pool Villa is the named multi-bedroom apex unit with a separate dining pavilion and private spa pool. Every villa has the saving features: a private infinity pool of at least 10 metres, an open-air sala, an outdoor sunken bath, twin vanities, and floor-to-ceiling glass to the cove.

The Banyan Tree Spa Samui is the central operational proposition. Set across a dedicated lower-terrace pavilion with twelve treatment rooms and a separate Rainforest Hydrothermal circuit, the spa was named best spa resort in Thailand at the World Travel Awards in early 2026 (the most-cited recent spa accolade in Thai luxury hospitality). The spa runs the brand's signature Asian wellness programmes, the Royal Banyan, the Banyan Sensoria, the Thai Time-Honoured, in addition to fully residential 3-to-14-night wellness retreats developed with the in-house wellness team. Saffron is the all-day terraced restaurant overlooking the cove (the breakfast room); The Edge is the cliff-edge fine-dining venue (the signature evening venue with the bay aspect); Sands is the lower-terrace beachside grill; the Lighthouse Cocktail Bar is the headland-tip sunset venue.
