Seventy-four design-led private-pool villas on the Maenam coast, the island's most overtly designed five-star, the loudest pool-party hour, the most considered pet-friendly programme in Southeast Asian luxury hospitality.
"The only five-star on Samui that turns the music up rather than down, seventy-four pool villas in the design-magazine register, and the only resort beach on the island where the loudest hour is on purpose."
W Koh Samui opened in March 2010 as the W brand's first Thai resort property, the launch coming at the moment Marriott (then Starwood) decided to push the brand into the resort category after a decade of city-only openings. The site is the northern Maenam coast, a 12-acre beachfront-and-low-headland sliver between Bophut and the northwestern tip of the island, fifteen minutes by transfer from Samui airport. The masterplan and the original interiors were the work of the Bangkok-based design practice P49 Design with Ed Tuttle Associates; a comprehensive 2021 renovation refreshed every villa and dialled the colour-and-pattern register a notch tighter, while preserving the original architectural envelope and the property's loud, design-forward identity.
The 74 villas are arranged across the property in three categories. Spectacular Pool Villas (the entry category, set into the inner garden behind the beachfront line) are the smallest footprint but still substantial at around 200 square metres including the deck and pool; Marvellous Pool Villas are the seafront-facing single-bedroom category with the larger pool footprint and the direct beach access (the strongest category for the standard luxury booking); WOW Pool Villas are the two-bedroom corner units. The Extreme WOW Ocean Haven is the three-bedroom signature villa at the seafront with its own freshwater-and-saltwater dual pool, separate cinema room, and the brand's residential-scale signature suite. Every villa has the saving features: a private 8-to-12-metre pool, an outdoor bath, sound system, and the W's signature loud-colour-palette interiors.
The food & beverage offer is one of the most ambitious on Samui. The Kitchen Table is the all-day market-style restaurant with the strongest breakfast on the property; NAMU is the signature Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei evening restaurant designed as a darkened wood-and-bronze theatre with the open-kitchen drama; The Beach is the daytime beach kitchen-and-bar; WET Bar is the long-pool central bar with the resort's signature pool-party programme on Saturdays in peak season; and W Lounge is the high-glamour rotating-DJ lobby bar. The AWAY Spa runs eight treatment rooms with the signature touch-and-sound therapy programme; the FIT gym is open 24/7; and the resort's PAW programme is the most considered pet-friendly programme in Asian luxury (full pet welcome including W-monogrammed bed, bowl, food, walks).
What W Koh Samui sells is a register Samui's other five-stars do not occupy: design-forward, loud-music-tolerant, deliberately party-confident for the right hour, pet-friendly at the genuinely-considered level, and the only resort on the island built around an active pool-and-bar central plaza rather than a quiet seclusion-and-spa core. For the milestone bachelorette weekend, the design-conscious honeymoon, the dog-and-couple booking, and the anniversary that wants the cocktail-and-dancing version rather than the meditation-and-yoga one, W is the indispensable Samui address.
For a Samui honeymoon that wants the design-magazine version rather than the wellness-retreat one, W is the obvious answer, the Marvellous Pool Villa for the standard week, the Extreme WOW Ocean Haven for the milestone version. NAMU at dinner, WET Bar at sunset, the in-villa dining setup the resort runs against the beachfront, the pool-party Saturday for the louder evening if the trip wants it. The combination with Soneva Kiri (Koh Kood) closes the standout Thai-island honeymoon arc.
For the milestone bachelor or bachelorette weekend the W is the only Samui address that does the brief properly: a WOW Pool Villa or two adjacent Marvellous Pool Villas for the group of eight to twelve, the Saturday pool-party programme at WET Bar, the NAMU group-booking dinner, the in-villa DJ setup the property runs on request, and the transfer to Bophut's bar street ten minutes away when the night wants to escalate. The most-booked single occasion on the property.
For the design-conscious anniversary couple a Marvellous Pool Villa for the long weekend and dinner at NAMU is the standard booking; for the milestone anniversary the Extreme WOW Ocean Haven for the four-night stay with the in-villa private chef setup the resort runs by arrangement. The property handles the design-and-music register without slipping into kitsch, the saving grace of the W positioning on Samui.
