Conrad Koh Samui opened in March 2011 on a 25-acre property at Taling Ngam, the southwestern tip of the island where the road peters out into coconut groves and the coastline drops thirty metres in a series of granite ridges to the Gulf of Thailand. The site was masterplanned by the Hong-Kong-based practice WATG with the Thai practice P49 Design; the central design conceit was to set every villa on its own individual ridge, no two villas overlook the same patch of sea, and the entire resort reads as 65 individual platforms cascading down the hillside rather than as a single resort block. The property opened to the Hilton-owned Conrad brand with the original development partner, the local developer Country Lodging, retaining a minority interest. A comprehensive refurbishment programme ran through 2023.
The 65 villas are arranged in strict altitude bands across the hillside, every villa free-standing and every villa with at least a 9-metre private infinity pool, an outdoor sala, and a sunset-aspect deck. The category structure is straightforward: One-Bedroom Pool Villas grade by altitude (Sea-View at the lower altitudes, Ocean-View at the mid-band, Ocean-Front in the lower-terrace seafront line, the strongest single-unit category); the Two-Bedroom Pool Villas and the Three-Bedroom Royal Oceanview Pool Villas (the latter the largest pool-villa footprint on Samui by some margin) handle the multi-generation booking. The original architecture is a contemporary Thai-modern in dark hardwood and pale stone; the 2023 refurbishment lightened the interior palette and refreshed every bathroom and outdoor shower.
Jahn is the signature evening restaurant, Conrad's modern-European fine-dining venue, set at the upper terrace with the panoramic Gulf-of-Thailand and Five Islands view; the wine cellar runs deeper than most Samui resorts (the strongest French Burgundy holdings on the island, by some accounts). Zest is the all-day terraced restaurant near the lobby; the Garden Bistro is the seafront daytime venue; AURA is the lower-terrace sunset cocktail bar timed against the Five Islands silhouette. The 1,500-square-metre Conrad Spa runs eight treatment pavilions and the brand's signature Thai-and-Western treatment programme. The fitness pavilion, the yoga sala, and the kids' Aqua Kids programme round out the operational offer.
What Conrad Samui sells is the combination of the largest pool villa footprints on the island (the Royal Oceanview at 700+ square metres is the largest single villa unit in the Samui inventory), the only resort with the unbroken west-facing Gulf-of-Thailand aspect on Samui's southwestern tip, and therefore the most consistent sunset on the island, and the Hilton Honors loyalty programme integration that no other Samui five-star can offer. The trade-off is the position: 45 minutes by transfer from the airport (the longest among Samui's five-stars) and a remoteness from Bophut/Chaweng that the milestone-stay couple sees as a feature, but the dinner-out family booking sometimes sees as a constraint.
For a Samui honeymoon at the sunset-and-seclusion register, Conrad is the answer for the couple who wants the larger villa footprint and the west-facing aspect that Six Senses and Banyan Tree (both east-facing) cannot offer. The Aqua Kids programme, the in-house cooking class for the older children, and the Angthong Marine Park excursion the property runs are the family-trip closers. The 45-minute transfer is the only constraint.
