Alila Ubud opened in 1996 as The Chedi Ubud, the early-career Asian commission of the Australian-Singaporean architect Kerry Hill, and it remains one of the most important buildings of the genre. The site is a single hillside in the village of Payangan, 15 minutes by car north of central Ubud, on the eastern rim of the Ayung river valley. Hill's brief was to interpret the morphology of a Balinese hill village as a contemporary hotel: a sequence of separate pavilions descending a slope, organised along narrow stone pathways, with shared courtyards opening to the valley.
