"Kerry Hill's 1996 hillside village is still the most architecturally important hotel on the Ubud side of Bali. The black-tile pool floats over the valley, the room product reads as a quiet master class in tropical modernism, and the price band has stayed honest in a market that long since stopped being honest."

The Hotel

Alila Ubud opened in 1996 as The Chedi Ubud, the early-career Asian commission of the Australian-Singaporean architect Kerry Hill, and it remains one of the most important buildings of the genre. The site is a single hillside in the village of Payangan, 15 minutes by car north of central Ubud, on the eastern rim of the Ayung river valley. Hill's brief was to interpret the morphology of a Balinese hill village as a contemporary hotel: a sequence of separate pavilions descending a slope, organised along narrow stone pathways, with shared courtyards opening to the valley. The black-tile infinity pool that cantilevers off the central pavilion is the most-photographed visual in the property's catalogue and a frequent fixture on architecture history syllabi.

The 56 rooms and villas step down the slope across several categories. Superior and Deluxe rooms run 28 to 38 square metres in the main lodges, with private balconies, deep tubs, and the original timber-frame and alang-alang construction. Pool villas (Garden, Valley, and Terrace) range from 110 to 250 square metres of compound, each with its own walled garden, private plunge pool, and outdoor bathroom. The two-bedroom Hillside Pool Villa is the property's largest accommodation and the best fit for an extended honeymoon. Across all categories the material palette is consistent: weathered Indonesian teak, hand-cut paras stone, dark slate, and a restrained pewter-and-cream textile run.

The dining centrepiece is Plantation, the open-air pavilion that holds the main restaurant and lounge, with a daily-changing modern Indonesian and Western menu under a long-tenured Balinese head chef. Cabana, the poolside daytime restaurant, runs lighter Asian plates and the property's signature afternoon tea on the black-tile deck. The Spa Alila sits at the lowest terrace of the property and runs the brand's signature Spa Journey programmes; the Balinese Boreh and Mandi Lulur rituals are particularly well executed. Activities run through the hotel's experience programme and include the Bali Bird Walk with a property naturalist, dawn cycling tours of the surrounding villages, and a private Ayung River rafting departure.

Service is the Alila house standard executed by a stable, mostly local team; many staff members have been with the property since the Chedi years, which shows in the quality of guidance and the recognition of repeat guests. Alila Ubud was acquired by the Two Roads Hospitality group and subsequently by Hyatt in 2018; the property is now distributed under the Alila brand within the World of Hyatt portfolio, which has made award stays meaningfully easier than they were a decade ago. The price band is the most competitive of the top ten Ubud hotels for a property of this architectural quality.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For an Ubud honeymoon at a sensible price for a design-led property, Alila Ubud is the most credible booking under USD 600 a night. Book a Valley Pool Villa for the view, do dinner at Plantation the first night, take the morning Spa Journey on day two, and run the property's private rafting departure on day three. The black-tile pool at sunrise is the trip's defining visual.

Wellness Retreat

For a wellness week, Alila Ubud delivers a real Spa Journey programme without the all-inclusive pricing of the COMO model. Book a five to seven night stay, ask the spa team for a custom Balinese ritual sequence (Boreh, Mandi Lulur, Tirta Therapy) paired with twice-daily yoga in the spa pavilion, and let the kitchen build a parallel menu plan; the result is a strong wellness arc for roughly half the cost of the dedicated retreat properties upstream.

Solo Retreat

Alila Ubud is the strongest Ubud booking for a solo trip. The room count and the long-running design vocabulary make for a quiet, anonymous stay; a Superior or Deluxe room is meaningfully under-priced for the architectural quality; the on-property activity programme is a low-friction way to fill a four to six day stay without engaging a private guide.
