Hanging Gardens of Bali

Forty-four jungle villas on the Ayung gorge in Buahan, 30 minutes north of Ubud town, organised around the photographed-to-death two-tier infinity pool that earned the property its first wave of attention in 2013.

Honeymoon Anniversary Proposal Unique

"Yes, the pool. Two stepped infinity decks suspended over the Ayung valley, the most-Instagrammed swim in Asia, and one of the few photographs that the property in person actually beats. The Hanging Gardens is what happens when an architectural one-liner is paired with 44 well-built villas; the rest of the resort earns its keep."

The Hotel

Hanging Gardens of Bali sits on the rim of the Ayung gorge in Buahan village, Payangan district, a 30-minute drive north of central Ubud and meaningfully further into the jungle than the Sayan or Kedewatan cluster. The property opened in 2007 to mostly local attention; it became internationally famous in 2013 when an aerial photograph of its two-tier infinity pool, suspended on slatted timber decking over the gorge, became one of the most-shared travel images on the early Instagram. The visual still sells the property, and arrival by the in-house funicular tram down the cliff face to the main pavilion remains the most cinematic entry sequence in central Bali.

All 44 accommodations are private villas with private infinity pools, arrayed down the slope so that no two pools are in line of sight of each other. Categories step from Riverside Pool Villas of 110 square metres, to Pool Villas of 160 square metres with corner glazing onto the valley, to two-bedroom Family Pool Villas of 220 square metres across two split levels, to the Panakawan Estate, a three-bedroom villa with its own infinity edge and butler kitchen. Interiors mix Balinese hand-cut stone, alang-alang thatch, hardwood ceilings, and a colour palette of cream, oxblood, and dark teak; bathrooms feature dual rain showers and freestanding tubs aligned with the view.

The main pavilion holds The Pool Bar & Restaurant directly at the edge of the famous swim, as well as Ayung Terrace, the property's primary dining room, which serves a Balinese-leaning modern Asian menu under a long-tenured local kitchen team. The signature evening is dinner at the bar with the two pool decks lit from below; the signature lunch is a private barbecue on the river-level deck reached by a private path down the gorge. The spa sits at the lower terrace and runs the longest single-treatment menu of the upper Ubud properties, with a sensible focus on Balinese boreh, lulur, and mandi lulur rituals rather than imported clinical programming.

Service is good rather than great by the standards of the top three Ubud hotels; the property is larger and the staff turnover is closer to the regional average. What the Hanging Gardens delivers consistently is the visual: the pool, the funicular, the gorge, and a private villa with its own infinity edge into the same green. As a one-off honeymoon, anniversary, or proposal hotel, it is unmatched at the price; as a wellness or programming-led stay it is outranked by Mandapa, COMO, and Amandari upstream.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Hanging Gardens is the photographic honeymoon. The two-tier pool at sunrise, the in-villa private dinner with the gorge lit at dusk, the funicular ride to breakfast: this is the property to book if the couple wants the trip to read in pictures as much as it reads in person. Book a Riverside Pool Villa for value, a corner Pool Villa for the view, and the Panakawan Estate for a four to five night honeymoon where space is a meaningful part of the gift.

Proposal

For a proposal, the photograph of the pool decks at golden hour is the closing argument and the property knows it. Book a private cliff-edge dinner on the upper pool deck after closing, with the lighting at its full set; the team has a quiet, well-rehearsed protocol for the moment that does not feel staged. If you propose here, the ring shot writes itself.

Anniversary

An anniversary here works best as a three to four night stay paired with a Sanur or Seminyak beach extension. Book a higher Pool Villa category, do the private river barbecue once, the Ayung Terrace dinner once, and the in-villa spa programme on the middle day. The drive into central Ubud is the only soft spot of the property; budget 45 minutes each way for the Saraswati temple and the Tjampuhan ridge walk.
