"Twenty-five villas, every single one with a pool, all of them facing into the green of the Petanu gorge. The Viceroy is what happens when a Balinese family runs a Relais & Chateaux property for two decades and refuses to scale it; it is the Ubud honeymoon hotel that other hotels quietly send their friends to."

The Hotel

The Viceroy sits in Nagi, on a ridge ten minutes northeast of Ubud town, above a quiet bend of the Petanu river that the family who owns the property has long called the Valley of the Kings. The hotel opened in 2004 as a small, owner-operated villa hotel and has remained at 25 keys since, even as Ubud's room inventory tripled around it. The Chandra family runs the property in person, the senior management has been in place for more than a decade, and the operating posture is closer to a private estate than a hotel of this rating; it has been a Relais & Chateaux member since 2010.

Every accommodation at the Viceroy is a private villa with its own pool. The categories step from Pool Suites of roughly 120 square metres, to Terrace Villas, Deluxe Terrace Villas, Vice-Regal Villas, and the two-bedroom Viceroy Villa at 700 square metres. The architecture is Bali-classical with a polished modern hand: hardwood floors, hand-cut paras-stone bathrooms with sunken tubs, alang-alang thatched rooflines, and floor-to-ceiling glass that opens the living room onto a private pool deck. Each villa has its own walled garden, gazebo, and pool ranging from eight to twelve metres; the higher categories add a private spa room and a separate dining bale.

The main pavilion holds the dining and lounge spaces. CasCades Restaurant runs a small modern Western and Asian menu under a long-tenured Indonesian head chef and has held a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for more than ten consecutive years, with a 14,000-bottle cellar built into the cliff. Lemongrass serves a Thai-leaning lunch on the pool deck. A property-level helipad on the lawn is offered for couples who want to combine the stay with a Mount Agung sunrise or a sister-island day; the hotel also runs a private yacht out of Benoa for full-day Lombok or Nusa Lembongan trips.

Service is the property's most-cited strength on every review platform; the staff-to-guest ratio is approximately three to one, butlers are assigned to each villa, and the family's presence on site shows in the consistency of execution week to week. The spa is small (two indoor rooms plus the in-villa option) and intentionally so. The Viceroy will not deliver the wellness programme of COMO or the architectural ambition of an Aman, and it does not try to. The point is a private, well-served villa with a pool in the green, a kitchen that has held its standard for two decades, and a family on the floor.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For a Ubud honeymoon, the Viceroy is the most reliable booking in the upper market. Every villa has a pool, every villa has a butler, and every villa faces into the green of the Petanu gorge. Book a Terrace Villa for the first stay; jump to a Vice-Regal Villa for the second. The kitchen runs in-villa private dining without ceremony, and CasCades is one of the most consistent fine-dining rooms on the island.

Proposal

For a proposal, the Viceroy is the rare Ubud property whose owners will personally help engineer the moment. A pre-arranged cliff-edge dinner on the helipad lawn at sunset, a private blessing at the Pura Taman Saraswati water temple in the morning, and a tasting menu at CasCades to close the day will pull the entire 24 hours together; the family will route the planning through a single point of contact.

Anniversary

Anniversaries at the Viceroy benefit from the property's small scale. Return guests are tracked by villa and table preference; the kitchen has a quiet protocol of presenting a hand-piped commemorative dessert without prompting on a milestone year. Book the two-bedroom Viceroy Villa for a major anniversary; the master bedroom looks directly into the gorge.
