"The 150-metre rooftop pool that defined the category. Anything else is responding to it."
Marina Bay Sands is the most consequential rooftop pool hotel in the world. The 150-metre SkyPark Infinity Pool on the 57th floor, designed by Moshe Safdie and opened in 2010, established the visual language that every contender below this rank is in conversation with. The pool sits on top of three 55-storey towers connected by a 12,400 square metre rooftop deck that cantilevers 67 metres beyond the easternmost tower.
The pool is 146 metres long (often rounded to 150) and the volume of water held at 191 metres above the city is approximately 1,427 cubic metres. The infinity edge faces north over Marina Bay toward the central business district. The pool is accessible only to overnight hotel guests; day passes are not sold under any circumstances.
The SkyPark deck includes the pool itself, two CÉ LA VI restaurant and bar venues, a public observation deck (separately ticketed), and the Cloud 22 sky lounge in the West Tower. Hotel guests have access to the deck around the clock; the pool itself is open from 6 am to 10 pm.
The infinity edge looks north across Marina Bay to the central business district. From the eastern end you see the Singapore Strait and the container terminals; from the western end you see Gardens by the Bay. The defining swim is at 6 to 7 am before the sun hits the deck.
Marina Bay Sands has approximately 1,850 rooms across three towers. The Premier room categories (Premier Marina Bay, Premier Gardens) include preferred pool deck times during peak season. The Club rooms add CÉ LA VI dining access. The Sands Premier Suites are the room category most travelers underestimate: the harbour view from the higher floors of Tower 1 is functionally the same as the SkyPark itself, with no queue.
Premier Marina Bay room in Tower 1, the highest floor available; the harbour-facing window catches both the sunrise and the SkyPark light show at night.
Swim at 6:30 am. The deck has fewer than 30 people at that hour, the Singapore sun has not yet hit, and the city below is still half asleep. The CÉ LA VI breakfast restaurant opens at 7 and is the right pairing.
Marina Bay Sands ranks #1 on our Top 20 Rooftop Pool Hotels list. It also features prominently on the Forbes Travel Guide ratings for Singapore and is a longtime fixture on Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List and Gold List.
